With so many choices from the millenium falcon to imperial aces, I have no clue. Also I dont know how many of each unit I should own for me and my girlfriend to play.
New to X-Wing, Need Advice
Try to look up "Buying advice" among the topics on this forum. You should find plenty of info there.
Yes, there are a lot of threads on it and to sum it all up.....everything is good! Well, I'd avoid the Tie Phantom for a while. Look into getting at least 4 Tie Fighters for the Imperials.
First thing to ask yourself is "what style of game do I want to play?". Do you want to fly a bunch of lower skill pilots like a Tie Swarm, or a few "Aces"? Also Rebels, imperials, or scum? Each faction has it's own style as well. When I started I just bought the ships that I thought were cool, which amounted to everything!
Like the other folks said, there's a number of threads about what does what check those out; play a lot and you should start to dial in on what ships and style you're leaning towards.
You're new to the game, buy what you think will be fun to play. Have you always wanted to be Han Solo in the Millenium Falcon? Then buy Han Solo. At this stage, you're not flying to have some fun. So, have fun, buy what think looks cool, and don't worry about the competitive scene.
Edited by gekigangerv1) Get two cores (TFA and the original red one). You'll get extra dice, extra rulers, R2-D2 and BB-8. Totally worth it.
2) Get the ships YOU think look cool and think will be fun.
3) Worry about the other details later.
4) Also check eBay for lot deals, and there's a FB page that I've gotten good deals on (https://www.facebook...ingSwapandSell/)

Right I see where you went wrong.
Dont over think it.
Get an original series core and the force awakens core. Then add a couple imperial and rebel ships every week or two to your collection.
Take it slow and have fun. Try out new styles and ships.
Dont add scum faction for a while.
If "buying a couple of Imperial and Rebel ships every week" is the criteria for "taking it slow", then I'm in bad shape. Of course, getting paid once a month is a serious deterrent to poor planning, but still... bah... who am I kidding... I probably average at least 4 ships a month... so maybe I'm only glacial...
There is no right or wrong way to buy ships. Sooner or later you will make a mistake on the whole thing... just put them on the table and learn how to fly. You will see a lot of changes in what you can do in the course of the next few months to years. Enjoy the journey!
I get a ship about every 2 weeks.
Welcome to the game and the community, let me answer your question very simply,
If your playing for fun get what you want, what is entrusting and start from there. (Rebel Aces, Most wanted and Imperial Veterans are excellent to start with because of what they offer)
If you looking to jump into tornys you are going to need to buy at least 1 of everything because ships come with different upgrades, there is some over lap but not for every card and most people that sale singles charge close to buying a single small ship over the large ones.
Keep asking questions as most of us old dogs have played from wave 2 or 3 onwards and have been where you are.
Edit *** buying the first starter set is a good next purchase. Good ships extra 3 models and EXTRA DICE.

This "one of every ship" includes the Epic ships... they have a lot of cards that are essential if you want to jump into tourneys. Considering that we just migrated from Store Championships to Regionals, you will have time to purchase quite a bit before the next round.
First buy for the flavor, then go for the upgrades ![]()
Buy ships. Buy everything. EVEERRRYYYYYTHING!

If you want to get right into 100pt games then the Falcon would be an great choice choice as you can make an ok list with Han and an x-wing, it won't be super competitive, but it'll get you started in seeing full games.

Boo I love the Phantom ;-p
One of each core set is a great place to start since you're going to want the extra dice and the core sets are great value for money. From there, I'd suggest adding ships to Rebels and/or Imperials based on what interests you and avoiding expanding into Scum until you have more of a collection. Scum is great but running many of their ships requires a number of upgrades from all over the place.
I think it's useful to focus on the expansion packs that contain the essential upgrades for that ship *in* that expansion. For example, I'd steer clear of the TIE Advanced since you're really going to need an Imperial Raider Corvette in order to make the best use of the ship, which is quite an investment in order to run a single ship.
Here are expansions that (for the most part) contain the main upgrade cards you'd want/need for the ships they contain:
Millennium Falcon
Outrider
Z-95 Headhunter
Decimator
TIE Fighter
TIE/fo
TIE Phantom
TIE Adv. Prototype
Imperial Aces
Punishing One
Mist Hunter

As awesome as the TIE Phantom is, it is complicated for a new player to get a hang of and I'd steer them away from it. That said, I have noticed that those that play the Phantom early are forced to become better players faster.

Yes I'm shamefully quoting myself.... but with only the Falcon and TFA Core sets, you can make this list. As I said before, it's not super competitive, but it'll get you started in 100pt games where most people play.
you may want to bookmark that site as it's VERY useful. as is the wiki to help find what to buy next since the expansions are not randomized.
