New to the VT-49 Decimator, tips on flying?

By killakan, in X-Wing

So I just bought this today, and I don't have the Raider or the Lambda, how do I fly this thing?

If you go for kenkirk or chirpy (chiraneau) spend four points on engine upgrade before you do anything else, next you pick crew isard extends its life considerably, rebel captive is another good choice.

As for flying it you will bank alot, like really alot.

Try to use boost to avoid arcs and shoot stuff.

Be very careful.

Rebel Captive would be a good choice, if I had one, depending on how much birthday money I get, I'll get a Lambda.

Be very careful.

Not helpful, I wish we had a dislike function, JUST for that comment.

Oicunn with Daredevil, Dauntless, Engine Upgrade, and Anti-Pursuit Lasers. Ram all the things! Maybe not super competitive, but it sure feels good ramming annoying enemy ships to death with it.

Depends on the matchup. Vs TLTs and Jumpmasters, you want to exploit the range limitations with regards and hug range 1. Vs. Basic arced ships, on the other hand, you want to hug range 3 and Fire out your backside while dodging arcs with 3-banks and turns+Boost. Aces are trickier because autothrusters+Palpatine+Evade token makes it hard to push damage through with just a Decimator and an Ace or a pair of crackshot Ties.

Brace for impact.

No, seriously. You gon get hit. A lot. Take that into account. Hell, Expose at -1 agility isn't a bad idea since you don't take a penalty of any sort. So bearing that in mind, keep your Decimator AS FAR AWAY FROM THE ENEMY AS POSSIBLE. It's hard since it's a fatty fat fat fatty fat ship, but with 360 degrees of attack and with Expose, 4 dice being thrown around? You're solid.

But those weak shields don't last long. That massive hull total? That's BAD news for you if you're up against critters. No seriously, that's a lot of chances to crit your bad boy up. Take that into account, but most importantly, when the inevitable does indeed occur...

Brace for Impact.

I used Kenkirk with Isard as a "Palpatine Delivery Vehicle" in a recent team tournament, but as you noted, you don't have access to the Raider's cards. In that case, the most fun build is Oicunn w/Dauntless, Gunner and Isard (Isard is practically an auto-include on a Deci build). Intimidation in the EPT slot is good on Oicunn too if you have it. Basically, I would follow the advice of the great Admiral Horatio Nelson - "Forget maneuvers - just go at them!" If it was good enough for Trafalgar, it can work for X-Wing too :)

Be very careful.

Rush them. I use the decimator as a tank to protect my more fragile pieces.

Oicunn predator mara jade is a fun start.

My personal favorite is Kenkirk with Isard and the moff that lets chuck a crew out the airlock instead of taking damage.

Big O deathroll! 2 threads in a day!

Oicuun + daredevil+ dauntless+ gunner+ Vader + EU

If you can Ram it and it has higher PS, it will do 4 damage at minimum. And you could theoretically do like 12. Yep. If they are lower PS they can't shoot you (which is good at range 1 with NO AG) you can probably still shoot one of thier buddies.

My record for most ram damage in a game is 16pts of ram damage + however much the primary does. They are fun.

My personal favorite is Kenkirk with Isard and the moff that lets chuck a crew out the airlock instead of taking damage.

Jerjerrod does not stop you from taking damage unfortunately, he just lets you flip a crit face down. If that crit is direct hit, then yeah, he saves you a point, but otherwise he's not that great.

Sorry, I guess I didn't word that too well.

tip # 1: fly oicuun

tip # 2: fly oicuun into opponents

tip # 3: profit

You don't need any tips. Just have a higher pilot skill and boost. You have a turret and with PredaTor, Gunner, Vader, Ysanne, Engine Upgrade on Rear Admiral Chiraneau you can fly like an idiot and still delete a ship a turn.

Turrets sure do take skill.

Yes, that loadout is 65 points but Soontir's optimal loadout is 35 so it works out. You can just trade RAC for something and then they'll be unable to kill Soontir.

ummm. I said that becuz mine broke. The little peg.

Then say "be careful not to brake the peg."

I think there is two ways to play a decimator competitively. Invest in the admiral heavily with an engine upgrade, rebel captive, what ever you like. Then bring in a phantom to hammer your opponent or proxy Col. Vessery with D title and ion canon.

I fly the decimator a lot and I think the very best decimator is a diet decimator. They can go down easy so I prefer not to lose a lot of points when it does. Remember you can minimize the damage they take by bumping, they can shoot you if they are touching you. That is a good way to fight a fraction of your opposition at a time. You will bump a lot so bring the predator ept. It has a goid dial where you can move large distances that catch your opponent off guard and sometimes dodge some archs. Try this list, it's really fun and good.

Captain Oicunn - predator

Inquistor- title, ptl, at

Doom shuttle.

Equip an Engine Upgrade and make it your first priority to boost out of arcs against non-turret ships every turn. Or go full ramming speed Oicunn to actually have fun :P

Sorry, but I and many others are really tired of the playstyle this ship usually encourages.

I'm new to the game, but i bought this with the core set. As I don't have many ships, I've played this in every game (or my opponent that I supply). My comments are below, but take them as you wish...

I've been testing it three different ways: offensive (rac), balanced (rac + isard), and tanky (kenkirk + isard). Then I just build around it depending on what I want it to do (ramming, etc.).

Without Isard or Kenkirk, it's a pain not having any agility. Keep in mind that if this is the case, focus only works offensively. With only target lock besides this, might want to consider an upgrade that gives more versatility in actions.

As with all large ships, be careful not to go off the edge, especially due to ions.

On a side-note, the ship extends it's base quite a lot, so you need to find the right height so it doesn't bump into other ships.

Another option is experimental interface with the expose ept, seven points gives you four attack.

Brace for impact.

This. The two types of Decimators that seem to be the most "consistently competitive" are Decimators running Expose and Decimators running Vader crew. Expose gives you more attack dice without any negative (on a Decimator) and Vader lets you make a "suicide ship" that uses all those extra hull points to inflict crazy numbers of crits on your enemies.

I love the Decimator. One key is to NEVER take a chance on flying when it comes to asteroids (and even debris to some extent). Always take the safe maneuver over a risky one. It's a 360 turret so perfect maneuvering is not that important. Also, if you trick them out, try to put in defence because the more you spend on it, the more of a target it becomes and Decimators don't last long.

First of all. Ignore those that are telling you don't run it with Engine Upgrade or other things cause they don't like it or allege that many people don't like it. You paid good money for a good ship. Run it with the options you want.

Do not get sucked into the "if you fly this build or this ship you are garbage." This kind of thinking is garbage. The game has turrets so get over it. They aren't going away.

Fly it for a while and see if you like it.Lots of different builds are quite viable even on the competitive stage.
