Fleet Building Discussion for a First Timer

By ArbitraryNerd, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Heyo, I'm an X-Wing player looking to throw some Star Destroyers down on the table. I have not officially played my first match of Armada yet, and so I have no idea what the meta looks like OR what the normal considerations are for list building.

I was hoping that, if I regurgitated something after looking at my cards and trying to come up with something strictly from there, some wonderful Armada Veterans might help a fella out w/ finding out where to look.

I'm currently only buying Imperials, and have:
Starter

VSD

ISD

Gladiator

Raider

1x Imp Squadrons (thought I had two, found out I did not)

Rogues and Villains

I don't quite understand the importance of the initiative bid in Armada yet, though I'm sure I'm missing something super obvious. With this in mind, my list is at 400 even, so suspect I'll have to start THERE with my issue.

Alright, the list:

"I have a bad feeling about this"

Imp II SD

Admiral Screed

Admiral Chiraneau
Boosted Comms

Flight Controllers

SW-7 Ion Batteries

Title: Avenger

Role: This guy is supposed to hang back and throw his longer-ranged dice around, while bossing the squadrons around.

Gladiator I SD

Nav Team

Ordnance Experts

Rapid Reload

Title: Demolisher

Role: Focus on broadsides while attempting to flank opponents.

Raider II

Intel Officer

Overload Pulse

Title: Impetuous

Role: Just hoping to land the overload pulse for the Imp II's title.

Squadrons (aka Now I Really Have No Idea What I'm Doing)

Major Rhymer

TIE Bomber

TIE Advanced

JumpMaster

Boba Fett (Mostly because the Imp II's squadron value is 4, and I was planning on it being the primary squadron controller).

Please, rip me apart and feel free to be brutal!

Honestly, just run it and see.

Take Advanced Gunnery, Contested Outpost and Superior Positions as your objectives and see what happens.

You'll learn far more that way than anything we could ever tell you. Its a decent list, sure has some flaws, but without playing you cant possibly say what your flying style is.

Hey thar admiral, that's a fine selection of ships!

I own a similar fleet with extra raiders and squadrons, been playing all day and am just about to write up a few battle reports, hopefully they will be of some use for you!

Later once I'm done il post a few more questions for u specifically but il try and include some extra opinions in my post for your list building consideration

in the meantime I'd ask What size group of players do you have/ aim to have? And like to hear more about how much experience you have had so far playing?

I'm not saying that you haven't already, but make sure your clear on the order attack/crits/tokens are resolved in Armada. A friend and I didn't and were "x-winging" it until I found a post that gave a detailed attack order. I put it in here if I can still find it

Welcome to Armada :D

Being the fairly new game of the bunch, there are some inherent differences that become readily apparently (at least, from my view as an Armada Player who has attempted to dabble over at X-Wing :D So take it with that grain of salt :) )

We get 6 turns to play, so definite plans are something you need to consider with the game - there's very little running away and coming back later... It happens occasionally, but you need to build your whole list around that... Given that, you've got a definite plan already brewing with Avenger + Overload Pulse. That sort of thought is great to have. Its all a matter of execution at that point.

Furthermore, we tend to have fewer basic combinations in our cards... What that mostly means is we tend to see 1 or 2 someone ubiquitous upgrades, but rarely is a ship overloaded with all of its potential slots filled...

With that, Nav Team on Demolisher is quite cool - Its going to let you turn very tightly almost all the time you issue a Nav command... More ubiquitous in that fashion would be Engine Techs, but I'm not sure if you have that card with your Imperial-Only Purchasing thusfar.

The Squadrons are already building on each otehrs capabilities - so I'd say run with them - It will be more important to learn and run them together (to utilise Escort, Intel, and other special rules to your advantage) before dabbling in more or different :)

Otherwise, Fantastic Start. Go and play games and get that wealth of experience :D

Still, I have a printed hardcopy in my game bag.

Welcome to the club ArbitraryNerd! And from a fellow Imperial player, let me be the first to say welcome to the Dark Side. ;)

For your first time, you've clearly put a lot of thought into the list! Must be the experienced X-wing player in you. Much as you've asked us to be brutal, you've obviously thought through how you want to set up and use your ships, and they conform to a lot of typical builds you'll see dotted around the forum.

The best advice is simply just to play the list and see how you get on. We spend a lot of time (possibly too much...) playing about on list-builders, agonising over tiny decisions, when in reality the only way to find out what works is to give it a whirl. You'll quickly find out where you might have overspent or underspent, and can tailor it accordingly.

Good luck, let us know how it goes!
