Conflict at the Carrock

Hey everyone,

My partner and I just played this quest today for the first time. We scooped after round 3 in the first game because she got 2 heroes sacked and roasted slowly.

In the 2nd we managed to win, and the 3rd we improved our score on the win. But, one thing that bugged us about the quest was Grimbeorn. In the first game, we didn't see him, in the 2nd we finally did, but couldn't even come close to getting him as an ally.

In the third, we saw him in the last round. We also never saw the Bee Pastures. Is there anything that anyone has done to get him and actually use him, or is it just pure luck of the encounter deck?

After the first loss, we even quested through the first stage really slowly to try and build-up and prep for the Trolls, and even then it took forever before he was revealed.

Just kind of seems way too rare or difficult to get him/use him to be an objective. We liked the quest, otherwise, it was a decent challenge.

Pure luck.

There is only 1 of him in the deck, and 3 locations that let you search for him so its pure random luck. Its important to stay below 34 threat and engage 1 troll at a time. Try to move as slowly as you can through quest 1B building up a strong board state.

This is how we did it after getting sacked the first time. But, since we are only playing with cards as they come along in the packs, our access to threat reduction is limited to Galladhrim's Greeting 2x from the Core set.

In the 2 successful attempts, we advanced to the trolls with more than 34 threat each time, but managed to live through them pretty easily by chump blocking. In the 2nd successful attempt, we forest snared one Troll, and in one round, my partner put 2 Feints out so that allowed us to slice em up pretty good.

We never got the Bee Pasture, except as a **** Shadow card lol

A possible move, and how I beat CotC on my second attempt, is Gandalf. I used a Sneak Attack/Gandalf to drop my threat by 5 as well. You should have two Sneak Attacks and Four Gandalf with the core set.

I used my SA/Gandalf during the quest phase with a big "push" to clear stage 1 with plenty of willpower to spare, dropped my threat back to ~32 range and then I was able to selectively engage and destroy the trolls. I think I ended up doing this twice with a "hard" pay of 5 for him next turn as well and used him to tank a troll for me too! Since I was playing with two decks, I used G. Greeting in place of Gandalf for threat reduction.

In the three games we played CotC, I (with Leadership Aragorn) never got my Gandalfs lol my partner got hers though. Since we only have 1 core set we have 2 each in our decks.
