Simple Green Tips to remove paint

By D4RTH 0N5L4UGHT, in Star Wars: Armada

I have some ships I wish to remove the paint I put on them and I am not sure how to use this I am worried that I will ruin my ships or something. I am fairly new to painting miniatures and just want to change up the scheme on a few of them. Any tips would much appreciated as I have never used it before.

Thanks

Simple Green is good because its virtually foolproof.

Whole Model. Soak it. In its Concentrate, don't bother watering it down... Let it soak for a few hours, and then try a scrub with a mankey old Toothbrush.

Soak some more. Sometimes up to a few days. Simple Green won't damage the Plastic, or the original FFG paintwork, either...

But Simple Green isn't the most powerful, either - so let it soak.

If you can let it soak in direct sunlight where it can get some ambient heat, that helps too... But not too much, just slightly warmer is good.

But the whole reason you're using Simple Green and not something else caustic is Simple Green is Gentle on You and your Models...

Yeah, the only thing I've encountered with Simple Green is that it'll discolor metal miniatures you dunk in it.

...But you can paint over that.

...And the FFG models are all plastic.

So, it's just all good. :)

I was told it could make the plastic soft or damage it that was why I was worried

Thanks for the tips tho

I have yet to see that, even when leaving miniatures (Metal, Plastic and Resin) in a tub of 30x Concentrate for over a Week.

And quite often, that "Dark Grey-Black" Discolouration you'll get on Metal Miniatures isn't the Simple Green alone - its the Primer that's started to work on the metal (etching) as well... The Simple Green seems to speed it up.

I haven't used Simple Green, but a watered down Pin Sol solution was very effective on warhammer minis but it did soften the figures if left for over 12 hours. However, after a few days the plastic hardened back up. I would hope that even if the armada ships did soften, they would dry back up after a while. I might be worried about warping, but armada ships seem like a much tougher plastic than warhammer.

As an Armada Commission Painter, I only use two things...

Simple Green.

Rubbing Alcohol.

Which one I use, depends on whether I want to maintain or remove the original FFG Paintjob, respectively :)

I heard pine sol works as well. Any word on that?

It does, but will soften polystyrene Plastics (but not ABS plastics)...

But mostly, it stinks to the Nine Hells, even when dried - so I don't use it. :D

Easy Off Oven Cleaner also works for Plastics, but I do not recommend it, as it will strip your hands as much as it strips the Plastic/Metal.

Finally, some plastics are tolerant to Methylated Spirits, but others are not, so unless you wish to experiment and risk, I don't recommend it :)

Dettol and its associated non-branded Antiseptic Washes will work as well - but most of the time, they're just some subset of Isopropyl Alcohol, which is cheaper to buy in its straight up 95%... (Although now in Canada, I can't get it off the Shelves, I need to go to the Pharmacist, who is more than happy to hand it over when asked for)

Best to go non-toxic. Imagine the worst-case-scenario when it comes to stripping minis...a spill.
