Regionals Data

Think of what a great surprise vacation precursor to divorce it will be for your wife's birthday!

And Arbitrary, I'd show up. Where are you heading from? The two store championships I went to along the 91 corridor in CT were four and eight. I would imagine at least a dozen or so, but who knows? One of the store championships had about four people from Boston, so they'll probably be there. And I would imagine Reinholt will be coming up from NY.

Worst case scenario, you get kicked around for three rounds, learn a lot about the game, have some fun, and walk away with an Ackbar card (or four. . .'cause there are over sixty of them).

I'm actually only about an hour south of Boston -- I can take the commuter (with my Armada themed toolbox) into the city and then a couple subway stops to the store.

Considering my first ever X-Wing game was at a Store Tournament, it seemed fitting to up the ante with Armada.

That being said, I expect to spend three rounds getting hosed, instead of winning my first (and a couple other) matches during the first X-Wing tournament.

This isn't a game my local group is into, so I'll take whatever chance I can to throw a Star Destroyer on the mat. Love the concepts, I think the rules are relatively straight forward (though I'm going to forget engineering point costs and dice ranges, I'm sure), and I'm very excited to see exactly what kind of tactics it can all illicit.

... All while giving up easy tournament points to my opponents and thereby pissing off everything else.

As a child, I learned beginner's Judo.

My first "lesson" was a local tournament.

The judges were a bit angry and confused why I was punching my opponent when he was pinned :P

Everyone makes mistakes. If you have a few games under your belt, a Regional is fine but a Store Champ or Seasonal Kit tourney is better.

Arbitrary...don't be surprised (or get frustrated) when you get absolutely hammered by more experienced players. Armada is a little bit more like chess than it is X wing. An experienced/knowledgeable opponent is probably going to crush you...and i can only imagine that the Regionals in a major metropolitan area like Boston is going to bring out the experienced players. This game doesn't really depend on dice rolls. (I mean..it does to an extent, but not the way X Wing does). I don't say this to discourage you I just want to set your expectations low so you don't think the game is poorly designed or imbalanced if this happens to you; rather I would prefer it if you went on to keep playing Armada!

Wife and daughter are randomly away, and it just so happens to be the Armada Regional -- I'm definitely going.

... And it will literally be my first time at table for Armada.

I understand this is going to go poorly and annoy some/most folks.

I don't care one bit.

It would be nice if Armada picked up more at my local game stores, but I don't mind making an ass of myself until then.

I mean from what I understand the analog version of Armada differs from the digital one only that in the analog one you don't have to right click ever.

There is also a critical lack of a "Face punch" option in the Digital version, too...

Word man, just go play and have fun.

Well, I'll definitely be there. If we play each other, feel free to ask for clarification on whatever. I haven't had a single game go anywhere near to time. I'll probably introduce myself as Dan or Kinne, and I'm a loud, fat man with a beard and glasses. . .though that last part will probably describe a few people there, because there are a lot of us at game stores.

I am my local meta. I know people who own the game, but nobody wants to/can make it out when I invite them. If I didn't travel to a few bubbles of life within 2 hours of me, I'd never have played a real opponent.

Don't be afraid to go, as most people are nice about guiding new people through a game with questions.

I super appreciate the offer, though I'm not expecting anyone to baby the newbie! I fully recognize that I'm going to a Regional event, and it's pretty clear in the rules that I'm expected to know what's what.

I'm doing some cramming and reading and video watching. This is more homework than I ever did during either of my degree programs...

I'll be introducing myself as Dustin and be the balding, thick-ish fella with a bemused look on his face as he plays catch up :)

I always introduce myself as Galaxar, Knight of the Thrice-Cursed King, Lord of The Barrowlands, The Butcher of Gainestown, Offical Sandwich Of the Olympics

Whoa whoa whoa. . .I didn't say anything about babying the newbie. I'm going to crush your hopes and dreams to the point your daughter is ashamed of you. But I'll explain how and why I'm crushing your dreams. :) Or maybe not, 'cause I'm not exactly good at the game, I just have read a lot about it.

And Stasy, are you a regular at Pandy?

Pandy? I'm not sure what you're talking about?

Pandemonium Books and Games, where the Regional is being held in Boston.

I don't go often, though have been to an X-Wing tournament there, and probably would in the future. I prefer Battlegrounds in Plainville because it's FAR closer to my actual residence... But they've gone hard for X-Wing, not likely to pick up Armada anytime soon.

I've yet to make it there, I primarily roll into Harrisburg/Philly/NJ for Armada.

My work existence will be absolutely crushing the next 2-3 weeks, so Boston is out. Best I can hope to make is West Virginia for a 2nd shot at Regionals at the end of the month.

I know some Philly guys are trying to get me to go to Nationals. I have no idea if I'll go. Especially if I get prison raped again at a Regional. :D

There was a small group playing Armada in Plainville on Saturdays, I don't know if they're still doing that. In Pandemonium it's a hit or miss, though most of the time I stopped there (on Monday nights) I was able to get a game going.

So far we have data for the following:

  • San Antonio - 29 Players - 4 Rounds + Cut (complete)
  • Springfield - 30 Players - 4 Rounds + Cut (incomplete - top 4 only)
  • Louisville - 16 Players - 3 Rounds (complete)
  • Fargo - 9 Players - 3 Rounds (complete)
  • SoCal - 21 Players - 3 Rounds (incomplete - attendance only)
  • Kansas City - 14 Players - 3 Rounds (Incomplete - attendance only)
  • Pittsburgh - 16 Players - 3 Rounds (Incomplete - factions and admirals for Top 8)

Has anyone seen mention of other Regionals going on? I haven't had time to hunt for other tournament reports on other parts of the interwebs.

What about the future? I will be TO'ing in Vancouver, WA this Saturday and will have all the info for that one. What else is coming up? Who can get us more data?

Doesn't look like you have this one listed:

Looks like that's a Store Championship, no? This is specifically for Regionals.

Not that there's not value in capturing as much data as possible, that's just not what Shmitty is after here.

I appreciate the heads up, but yeah this project is more focused on Regional tournaments. Always looking for more data though, I'd like to fill in the holes I still have.

I'm hoping we'll get some info from one of the European Regionals just to see what their meta is like.

Other than the sample sizes of the individual tournaments (Fargo notwithstanding), is there any reason to believe that inferences made from the Regionals data would be more valid for understanding competitive Armada playing than data from Store Championships? (Not a rhetorical question.)

One aspect might be that regional championships might have less of a 'pocket meta' effect, in that they're less likely to reflect local meta anomalies, but I'm not sure how less likely that will be.

Sample size is a part of it as the expectation would be that Regionals would be a larger tournament.

You woukd also be less likely to see new or casual players at a Regional as the competition level is a bit higher.

But really, putting the data together is already plenty of work and I needed some kind of natural cut off.

bah, obviously you must dedicate your time to gather all information from every random AAR i post geeze...people...
