Whisper Decloaking for an Attack

By MatchstickMan740, in X-Wing

So I'm entering a painting contest at my local regional this weekend so I decided to so a new take on the decloaking phantom and poured a clear casting of the phantom and attaching the panels from an actual model, painting over the seams so it looks like the phantom is decloaking for an attack. Trying to simulate Whisper's card in a sense.

Look aright.

Yes sir. I like it.

I love it! I just ran this idea by my brother not too long ago - beat me to it though. Well done!

poor phantom you cut up.

is it cloaking or de cloaking? :)

Now you see me, now you die! ;)

Yeah this is the exact thing I was planning on doing. I just haven't gotten around to making a mold yet due to work. Nice work. What material did you use for the cast? Seems like it picked up nice detail from the wings.

That's a very cool idea.

My concern would be with the peg mount; does it still fit snugly on a peg?

If I was running a painting contest I'd question the extent to which this was... painting... If it's a painting and modelling contest it's a lot more legit, but literally the only thing you painted here is the lightning afaict?

But it's nonetheless very cool.

Love it! Maybe a little more detail around the cockpit?

In pretty confident he/she painted from the cockpit forward, including the lightning effect as it was stated that a clear casting was made from the original model.

Right there in the OP.

Well I ended up winning the contest hands down. Had more vote points than 2nd and 3rd combined.

very cool! congratulations. Now sell me that Phantom for $15!

Everyone else automatically loses.

Plus, generally speaking, painting and modeling go together pretty well. A lot (maybe even the majority?) of entries in miniatures painting contests modify their models in some way, shape, or form -- at least from what I've seen.

How did you get pieces of a Phantom to hover in mid-air?

I can't see how you were even in contention to win a painting contest with the blue/gray from the edge of the wing running over onto the black panel, but the modelling is very interesting.

That's actually the factory paint. The only painting I did was the lightning. It was more about the mod of doing the clear part of the phantom.

Also I took second last year in the painting contest with a monarch star viper, you could see the brush strokes and some of the really good painters ripped me on it. The rest of the field though was just super excited about the idea, goes to show the idea behind the mod/paint job goes much further than the actual paint job itself in a case where you we already have awesomely painted models and we're just modifying them.

It's called a painting contest but we had everything from fully repainted ships, to modded ships like mine, to lit ships where LEDs were added internally to make cockpits and engines glow. Really it's just how cool can you make an X-wing ship look contest.

Should do a YouTube or a HOW to video I would love got to do that or even do it to add parts to other ships etc
