Suicide Cannons?!

By bcons, in X-Wing

So I was at my FLGS for a casual fly night, and one of the guys I was playing had a really neat and crazy idea. What I like to call, Suicide cannons.

So, the basic idea is to get a ship with a ton of hull and shields. In this case, we will use the

B-wing.

We will also need an ept, so we'll get Keyan

Now, if you equip opportunist, you can take a stress to attack a ship without evades or focuses. If you do, you may roll one extra attack dice. However, you cannot use this ability while you are stressed.

For your systems slot, you can equip electronic baffle. Electronic baffle allows you to discard a stress or ion token, and then take a damage.

You may have noticed this (possible) chain reaction. You could practically damage your self until you have one hull to roll a great amount of attack dice.

Now, obviously, this might not be as effective with, say, an E-wing. But with a B-wing, this could be horrific.

So we have Keyan, with opportunist and electronic baffle. If you were to use this combo, you could end up with 10 attack dice! Why don't we throw an HLC on him? Or let Jan Ors give him an extra attack die?

So, as devastating as it may be, this will probably never happen. 34 points for Keyan and upgrades, not including HLC and Jan Ors, is pretty expensive for a one time use ship.

But hey. For all I know, this could be against the rules. In fact, it probably is. But, here is this funky, clever idea

Heh. No way FFG lets that go.

But you are my hero for thinking it up.

Could yo explain how to get 10 attack dices?

Oportunist can only be used once per attack. You can use it again on gunner, or each shot of TLT if you can clear the stress, but not multiple times on a single HLC shot.

I was under the impression that Opportunist only triggered once, but I guess, I don't really know the timing very well in this game.

I think he's assuming you can keep performing the card's ability over and over until it no longer applies.

But there is really no precedent to such an interaction.

'Opportunist' reads:

When attacking, if the defender does not have any focus or evade tokens, you may receive 1 stress token to roll 1 additional attack die. You cannot use this ability if you have any stress tokens.

...it doesn't say "repeat this as many times as you want".

Rather, you may receive 1 stress token to roll 1 additional attack dice, and the card is now 'complete', moving on.

I don't see why it wouldn't work, neither one of them are a "once per" ability. Amd the chain reaction would all resolve before the attack actually happened. This has some potential...

"Once per opportunity*" says thanks for playing. ;)

*Intentional naming of the rule? :P

All abilities are "Once per opportunity" per the rules. The opportunity for opportunist is "When attacking", so you can only do it once per attack.

If it did you could bank an opportunist interceptor up to 8 dice with Yorr nearby.

If it were possible, the OP's B-Wing would basically be the prototype B-Wing superlaser from Rebels.

as far as I remember there's an ability to throw stress onto enemy until he has 2 of it

Electronic Baffling enemy can deliberately kill himself, because the stress is assignes one by one xD

But that's Transport, and it's EPIC

It's kind of like that sweet combo with Eaden Vrill! Eaden's pilot ability reads

"When performing a primary weapon attack against a stressed ship, roll 1 additional attack die."

All you have to do is stress a ship (with Flechette Torpedoes, Tactician, etc.) then attack. Roll an extra die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Roll another die using Eaden's ability. Keep rolling extra dice until you roll a hundred hits. You can instantly kill any stressed ship!

You probably assumed that you couldn't add infinite dice with Eaden's ability, even though the ability doesn't say "once per attack". You probably assumed if it worked that way, it would say "roll infinite additional dice".

And you'd be right. There's a once-per-opportunity rule that prevents you from triggering the same ability infinite times off a single event.

With Electronic Baffle + Opportunist, you essentially turn Opportunist into "When attacking a ship, if it has no focus or evade token, you may take 1 stress to roll 1 additional attack die." It's just like Eaden Vrill, except it triggers off the lack of a focus or evade token instead of the presence of a stress token.

That's why this combo doesn't work.

Oh so you mean we already have THIS? :P

As noted, Once Per Opportunity kills this stone dead, as it should be.

Oh well. I guess back to the drawing board for trying to make electronic baffle useful* ;)

*by useful I mean besides Corran with regenerating R2D2

As a one point upgrade, I've used Electronic Baffle on Zuckuss in the Mist Hunter a few times. Being able to 1-hard with an action is really useful occasionally. It's situation usage does mean that a whole game can go by without me feeling happy to spend that one damage though.

Corran without FCS is Horn with PTL+EU+Sensor+R2\R2D2=bat-Horn

he rolls around like wicked, barrelling around, bumping and regenning, with no self-stressing.

baffle is a joke compared to sheer awesomeness of this bat-wing)

yeah you wither have FCS or sensor jammer. I guess PTL but really FCS give you that for less and you have an EPT slot open for predator or VI.
