How does one contact a Moderator?

By Archangelspiv, in X-Wing

Hey Everyone,

Apparently I have been reported for making political commentary, by quoting what someone has said and replying to it. Also using a phrase which wasn't directed at anyone but apparently I have been abusive..go figure.

So, my question is, can we contact Moderators? Or do they hide in the shadows and pounce on unsuspecting victims? I just want to know if the person who made the original comment got a warning too. Maybe I can get all political and carry on about free speech or something equally ambiguous.

To keep it Star Warsy.. how about those IDs hey....

Cheers Arch

I'm surprised I'm not banned. Just sayin.

At the bottom of the page, main thread, it shows a moderator's name. You can try pm'ing him. As a last resort try going through the "contact us" section. They might have a way. As a last, last resort you always have snail mail. Though in that case I'm not sure who you would address it to. The moderators may not be on site at the main office.

You can search FFGEvan I think he was online a minute ago when I was basking in my warning point.

I'm sure there are ways, but isn't this sort of like telling a cop out you just want to be sure that other speeding car got a ticket?

i'll drink to that

I tried to PM an mod after getting my warning some time ago, but it was a dead end. I'm sure the mods would get bombarded with unwanted/unnecessary messages if they had open PM accounts. I'm sure the job is tough enough without dealing with all that noise.

As the person who you replied to, I'm genuinely sorry that someone reported you for your reply. While your reply did assume something that I never said to be true, I'm sorry that you were reported for it.

On a related topic - anyone know if/when the warning points count goes away?

Or when something bad happens when you get to a certain point?

Seems like I read somewhere that 3 strikes and you get a timeout.

Mine went away in a fairly (surprisingly to me) short amount of time. Maybe there's a time frame or post count.

just a note that you haven't offended me yet, but you've seen to be a little caustic. maybe want to tone it down a little? Not everyone talks like your group of friends.

also we dont have a good history for real life politics of any sort here.

Congratulations you already made contact! :)

Now I'm feeling left out. I've never had a warning point.

.. .and it sounds like the sort of thing I'd get tattooed on my arm .. kind of like Aces marking up their kills.

I figure it'd make me look like a badass if I go to the slammer as the hard core criminal folk would see how many Anonymous X-Wing Forumers I've aggrieved over the years.

Post something obnoxious and inflammatory. You'll get their attention pretty quickly.

There is a report button next to each post and also when you view someone's profile.

Then the moderator reviews the post and if he believes it to be true he will lock the post and that will give you a bonus cough*ahem, ... I mean warning point.

Mods can remove warning points on their discretion say if you remove everything that would have gotten you that point and then continue to not be a jerk. I don't know how may warning points you can accumulate before you get a ban or an account locked/deleted.

Well I think Ribann wins beats any of us for warning points.

Man, I remember that guy. Anyone have archived posts of his? I've been in need of a good laugh.

In all seriousness though, it sucks to get a warning point, but if folks like YwingAce, ParaGoombaSlayer, McFoy and myself haven't gotten banned for the quasi-common sniping back and forth that happens, I think you are ok.

I'm sure with that attitude you'll have that warning removed in no time...

Reporting posts is a childish tactic to silence people that have different opinions... Sounds like a tactic of Regressives...

It can be, sure, but it can also just be someone following through on their terms of service agreement, and reporting rules violations to the mods, in order to try and keep the forums a more welcoming and pleasant place.

I have this puzzle box that contains "moderators"... You are intrigued?

Yeah and removing arseholes from community events is suppression of free speech ;-)

Forum moderation is a simple way to keep the community in a way the operators like and reports are a way to help with that. Keep in mind that free speech does not apply to that, because the right of free speech allows you to say whatever you like to say, but it does not force others to give you a platform for that nor to listen to it. For the same reasons Graffitis are not protected by free speech. ;-)

But at the same time I do agree that people might try to abuse the report system, on purpose or because they assume different goals of the site operators. In either case this is simply a matter of judgment from the moderators in the end, which means that such systems are rarely successful abused … except when you talk about facebook or google, etc … which use mostly automatic systems which get abused indeed to a heavy degree.

Suppression and pbysical removal are the only way we can fix this thing fellas. ID comment, and tone policing. Let's make, The Empire Great Again!

Reporting a post doesn't leave any warning posts. All it does is put a message in the moderators inbox and they look at it and either lock/delete thread and place a warning point or delete the trash report. So you not agreeing with someone won't get their post removed, you have to have a mod agree with you that the post violates the terms of use agreement.

Apathy, on the other hand, is letting something wrong continue to happen so you can have fun eating popcorn. Mmmmmmm ... popcorn.
