That Theme's Operational! A new article series on Theme in X-Wing.

I like it! One thing you slightly miss theme wise is that when Lando flies the Falcon in RotJ, Nien Numb is his co-pilot. Nien Numb gives all green straight maneuvers, which goes great with Lando's pilot ability and they fly down a long straight tube to hit the core.

Admittedly, that could go in a Nien Numb section. Or maybe look for thematic interactions, and not just cards? I will definitely be looking for more of this series!

Yeah in the interest of not running too long with it, I decided to save Nien for another day. :) Thanks for reading.

4/5 is a bit much for Lando pilot.

I'd go on something like this:

5/5 is nailed it.
4/5 is a good match but not a nailed it. Luke, for example. His ability fits his Force sensitive dodging but it's no C-3PO's telling you the odds. I'd also put abilities like Vader crew here that match but a technicality of implementation means they feel a little off. Vader killing his ship for example.

3/5 is an okay match but might take some bending. Vader pilot's ability goes here I'd say. Soontir Fel performing under stress would go here unless there's some lore backing for that.

2/5 is a poor match that takes a lot of bending over to connect. There's a tenous link. Carnor Jax sounds like it could go here.

1/5 is a pilot ability utterly unconnected to the pilot/works on mechanics alone with no thematic backing. Roark for example.

0/5 goes against the card's stated ability. Jerjerrod murdering his friends comes to mind.

Cute read, thanks for sharing

I like it! It would be cool to see it on an entire squad level, like running Vader with Black Squadrons, and perhaps a Black 8. Trench run lists as well. Can't wait to see more in the future!

A long while back I put together two articles about thematic squads, Battle of Yavin, and Battle of Endor.

With this new article series I want to really focus on individual cards and examine how well the theme works for them, though more articles about lists that share a common theme could be cool.

Nice article. Concise and humorous. Hope you continue 5 lightsabers out of 5.

I really like that you're focusing on the 'fluff' and totally agree that it is a misleading word. Ad soon as I read the text for the Scum Cloaking Device, I loved it! Sure, the chance to fail in annoying, but the 'knock off' feel is so thematic.

And it fails when you roll an "eye" and get seen! Genius!

Couldn't get past the comment that Lando Pilot card is obviously from ROTJ.

WRONG

Take a look at that card art. What's that on top of the Falcon? A big round radar dish. And what's behind the Falcon? A big explosion ready to engulf the ship. BUT this cannot be the same scene in the film since moments earlier, before the main DS reactor was hit, the dish was knocked off! So, I must conclude that this card shows Lando escaping from a different fireball from the time in his career when he first owned the falcon.

Or the artist messed up. But we know that never happens (Gold Squadron Pilot, go home, your Y-wing is drunk)

(Actually this was a cute article and I look forward to more)

Fun read.

Maybe the straight manoeuvres where how he won the Battle of Tanaab. He just flew hard and straight into his enemies. His boldness was unexpected by his foe and he caught them with their breaches down. Maybe, that's why the Rebs gave him the General position for Battle of Endor. They wanted someone to fly straight into a DS and destroy it.

Hahaha I've never noticed that.
