I need help...

By Eronenris, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I have spent hours trying to figure this out, maybe I am just overlooking something.

I am huge descent fan, bought it way back in the day when first edition came out. Been playing board/card games for 25+ years. Ever since Hero Quest first came out I have been hooked to that style of game. Which is why Descent is so amazing. Anyways.

I recently picked up the Forgotten Souls expansion so my wife and I could play together (she hates non co op games). But for the life of me I can't figure out how some of these mechanics work. The one that really has me stumped is monster activation and attacking. The master Flesh Moulder in particular, On his monster card it shows a heal ability with and arrow next to it, I know that arrow means it requires and action to use it. But at what point does this monster use it? Does he use it whenever there is a damaged monster within range? Can he only use it if the activation card says so? Or does it not get used at all in the Forgotten Souls?

I can easily understand how it would work in a normal game with an Overlord player, but with the automated system, I can't for the life of me figure out how and when to use this skill.

Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks.

In the Forgotten Souls expansion, when activating monsters you do so in the order and manner described on the monster activation cards. Essentially the cards describe the 'algorithm' that the monster uses to determine what to do, going from top to bottom. There are many activation cards in which the Master Flesh Moulder does not mention his Heal skill, therefore he will not use it at those times. So yes, you are correct, he is only allowed to use it if an activation card or active exploration card explicitly says he should.

Because the co-op game is 'tacked on' to the regular Descent experience, there are going to be many mechanics/abilities/etc. that aren't used, even from the base game (for example, the Wildlander Danger Sense skill does nothing in co-op). Therefore, do not be alarmed if there are play materials/cards that stay in the box.

Despite this, its still a good experience, in my opinion.

Oh, and a pro-tip for you guys: If you want to make things much easier on yourself, bring a Thief with Sneaky to get through the doors. It is immensely helpful in co-op.
