Vassal Question

By Caldias, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi all,

I think I figured out how to use most of Vassal. I can draw line of sight, navigate down the maneuver tool (only up it, not down it), and have most everything figured out. The new Vassal tournament looks amazing, but I don't think I would be comfortable enough with how it works to volunteer as tribute. My question is, do people actually hang out on Vassal looking for games? Or do folks typically organize games beforehand? Just curious, cause I would love to try it out.

Oh, and for things like Ordnance Experts, do you just declare in the chat what dice specifically you are rerolling for before you do it?

Yup people are on all the time. There is also a FB group. You should dive in. I'd be happy to help out!

Welcome! :D

Yes, when rerolling dice using OE or concentrate fire tokens, you would say "rerolling blanks" or "rerolling second red dice from the left", something that makes it clear for your opponent what you're doing. :)

Is there a link to the FB group?

Thanks! Down the rabbit hole I go.

Welcome. As rabbit holes go it's quite pleasant. Warm and welcoming. Not too many hatters or disappearing cats. Nor jabbervocks.

Thank goodness! If there were jabberwockys I would need a vorpal blade.

Yes, feel free to join.

These days there is a lot of activity. More and more people are logging in.

As long as you do things in a logical order, say right to left etc, then a lot is taken on trust. I mean if you reroll the one on the end, then the one at the start, and then back to the middle, it looks like your just fishing for a crit. However, its all about trust on Vassal, if you cant take someone at their word its gonna be a long game.

A better technique perhaps: when you reroll multiple, just cancel the dice you want to reroll first, then Add dice. If doing a single re-roll, like a CF token or whatever, you can do the standard reroll.

Sigh. I still cannot get this to work. ugh.

Cannot get what to work?

Vassal in general? Specifically the Armada module?

What seems to be the problem?

Did you try watching my setup tutorial (found on the FB group)?

My laptop is telling me that it is missing the Java environment. I went in and downloaded what I needed, and when I go to install, I am still getting the "Java failed to Run" error on setup. I need to fiddle with this a bit, I think.

Ah, so a Java thing. Not sure I can be of use there. All machines should be able to run Java.

I've signed up for the FB group, waiting to be accepted, but I have a question.

How long do games generally take? Does it have to be played all in one go? Or do folks play it like email games where you "send" a move and then come back later to see the next move from your opponent.

Omg a chess style email game would take years! :)

You can definitely save a game in progress. I guess the best thing to do would be to say you had a certain amount of time to play before you start playing. That way your opponent knows this.

Hi

I've signed up for the FB group also and I'm waiting for acceptance.

I've never used Vassal before but I'm very interested. I have a question.

Can I watch a game in progress so I can see how it plays?

Thanks in advance.

I did a game with MattShadowlord this week in three 1hour sessions.

Games take slightly longer than on an actual table due to communication being harder. There is no reason not to save it and come back later, but it helps if you complete at least one turn at a time so you remember where you are.

You can watch any games, (unless the players have locked the room, but this is discouraged!)

And normally, unless its a tournament game, players dont mind you asking questions either.

What hardware are you running? You may have your security settings set against non recognised publishers.

Yeah. I tried to do this before bed last night. At the office, so I cannot do much till late.
