Royal Guard TIE and VI/Adaptability

By Ronu, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So RGT says can't be applied to a ship with pilot Skill 4 or less. If I used Adaptability or VI on a Saber Squadron Pilot to bring them to 5 or 6 could I then apply the Title for the extra upgrade?

Moot because Saber Squadron pilot with VI is PS 6 at 22 points and Royal Guard Pilot is the same.

So, maybe, but one of the online squadron builders won't let you do it.

You could also put Adaptability on a Royal Guard Pilot to make him pilot skill 7 at still 22 points.

Do you want to use more generic Interceptors than you have Royal Guard Pilot cards?

I'd say you may NOT use the Royal Guard title with your Saber Squadron pilot despite having Adaptability on in. The reason: You don't get the PS boost until you put the ship into play so before that time you would have an illegal squadron.

You could use it with VI though, but as noted above, Royal Guard Pilots are just objectively better at that point.

Why do upgrades that give you another upgrade slot work during list building, but something that modifies your pilot skill doesn't?

Bossk with Veteran Instincts retains his pilot skill bonus when the Nashta pup ejects out of the exploding YV-666. The upgrade card isn't technically in play.

There's only a few things that come into effect once the game starts that I can think of, Adaptability and Agent Kallus.

adaptability is a +1 or -1 so till it comes into play it is neither

Kallus is based on the enemy ships and so doesn't work till after that

VI does work in list building.

Adaptability's face is only chosen during game setup, so it doesn't affect the ship during list building (or indeed, during setup, the ship is placed at its printed PS then adaptability is chosen), even if you know you will only use it a certain way.
