Bump and Grind

By Keiththegamergeek, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've been away a while, today I'm at home dealing with food poisoning so I'm going through my squad lists to take my mind off it.

Bump and Grind

"Chopper" (37)

- Dorsal Turret (3)

- FCS (2)

- EU (4)

- "Zeb" (1)

- Hera (1)

Total: 48

Arvel Crynyd (23)

- Chardaan (-2)

- AT (2)

- Title (0)

- Intimdation (2)

Total: 25

Roark Garnet (19)

- Dorsal Turret (3)

- Shield Upgrade (4)

- Intelligence Agent (1)

Arvel and Chopper together, brilliant! I missed Zeb crew the first time, but that mixed with Roark is a tasty combo, I may shamelessly steal this idea, but drop Roark's shield upgrade for Ion Projectors on Chopper.

I like it. But I haven't bought a Falcon yet. So I dropped the Engine and Shiled upgrades, added Leebo to the VCX and moved Hera to the HWK. Even without the Phantom, I can still fire Torpedos out the rear arc. That might be a rude surprise for someone.

I don't like the dorsal turret on the Ghost. Sure you can reach out to range 2, but 2 attack dice isn't going to cut it. ABT is 1 point cheaper and a lot better at range 1.

I'd also go with Kyle instead of Roark. Shooting at PS 12 is nice, but Arvel won't have any dice modifications if he bumps into a lower PS ship. With Kyle you can pass him a focus for his attack or Choppers.

Something like this:

Kyle Katarn (21)
Dorsal Turret (3)
Intelligence Agent (1)
Moldy Crow (3)

"Chopper" (37)
Fire-Control System (2)
Autoblaster Turret (2)
"Zeb" Orrelios (1)
Hera Syndulla (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Arvel Crynyd (23)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Intimidation (2)
Autothrusters (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Total: 100

I've been having a hard time liking the Ghost. I love it in the show, but not in this game. It just doesn't jive with my play style I guess.

These lists seem really fun so I might steal this for my next match. :)

Yup, a solid list. Here is how I ran it last night

Chopper 37, FCS 2, Dorsal 3, Adv. Proton Torp 6, Hera and Zeb. 50

Kyle Katarn 21 Dorsal Turret 3 Recon Spec 3 27

Arvel Crynyd 23 Chardaan Refit and Autothrusters 23 100 even.

Ran it against two Boba lists, one with Dengar and one with 4 Z-95. The initial jousts went my way and I found I used everything on every ship except the autothrusters on Arvel. Since I want to be in close most of the time, I need to take a look at some other options.

The fun part is passing the focus to Chopper so he has both the Target Lock from FCS and the Focus to make the most of the Adv. Proton Torpedoes. Though I may want to look at a slightly less expensive ordinance for the Moldy Crow title. Holding on to the spare focus could be advantageous.

And I have it. I drop the A-Wing for Ezra in the shuttle. I keep him stressed for added durability and he adds a little more firepower. Granted, he gives up some maneuverability, but I this could work.

I gave my list a proper shakedown last night at my FLGS. I played two games, winning both:

First game - mirror match against 2 K-Wings with TLT and Tactician and Poe with R2-D2, VI, and AT. The K's stayed together and got separated from Poe. I never got to bump or touch anyone, but Chopper still chewed up the K's pretty good, 5 attack dice with FCS TL's can really ruin your day. Having Garnet able to promote either Chopper or Arvel to PS 12 was huge. It was what enabled me to get Poe after disposing of the K's. As far as my own forces, Chopper lost his shields and took 4 hull damage, Garnet ended up with 3 hull damage, and Arvel lost a shield.

Second game - went up against torp boats, fat Contracted Scouts, one of which had Boba Fett. The second turn I got base to base with one of them and got in a devastating alpha strike with Chopper, and Garnet and Arvel finished him off. The torp boats gave as good as they got, but I whittled them all down. Garnet, who got hit pretty good after the first attack, managed to stay alive for two more rounds before succumbing, and both Chopper and Arvel had 1 hull point each left. The only crits my opponent got on Chopper were absorbed by shields.

Even if I do say so myself, I did all right, but I realized I could stand to do some tweaking. I'm dropping EU from Chopper entirely and adding Ion Projector. The other two points, I'm either going to put flechettes on Chopper or upgrade Garnet's secondary to an ICT, for that little bit of extra control.
