Friendly PSA regarding List formatting

By LtRico, in X-Wing

Hi all,

while browsing the forums these last few days something was "bothering" me, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it - until today. I've noticed, that more often than not people post the complete load out information of generic ships, even when they are entirely identical.

I understand that this might stem from the comfort of copy & pasting the information from an online squad builder - however, it clutters both the screen and the forum post itself while not helping conveying any additional information. It also increases reading time while possibly irritating the reader when discovering, after checking each individual upgrade for differences, that there aren't any.

Actual example from a currently active thread:

Named Pilot - Ship XX pts
EPT X pts
Crew X pts
Mod. X pts
Ship Total: XX pts

Generic Pilot - Ship YY pts
EPT X pts
Torpedoes YY pts
Torpedoes YY pts
Mod. YY pts
Ship Total: YY

Generic Pilot - Ship YY pts
EPT X pts
Torpedoes YY pts
Torpedoes YY pts
Mod. YY pts
Ship Total: YY

Generic Pilot - Ship YY pts
EPT X pts
Torpedoes YY pts
Torpedoes YY pts
Mod. YY pts
Ship Total: YY

There are plenty examples like this, both in the main and the sub-forums.
The same list could have been formatted like this, for example:

Named Pilot - Ship XX pts
EPT X pts
Crew X pts
Mod. X pts
Ship Total: XX pts

3x Generic Pilot - Ship YY pts
EPT X pts
Torpedoes YY pts
Torpedoes YY pts
Mod. YY pts
Ship Total: YY

However, if there is any variance - Plasma instead of Proton Torpedo - within the otherwise identical generics, by all means include that ship individually.

So please, consider shortening your list in forum posts when including multiple generics with identical equipment.

Thank you!

It's like that because we copy paste from squad building programs people don't type lists out.

So no I'm not going to go to the extra effort sorry.

I speculated as much in the OP, thanks for confirming.

However, I don't think requesting to reduce superfluous information when listing is too much to ask ... after all, you post that list for the other person to read.

You're asking people to create their squad copy it over then delete a portion and then add the number of generics.

Not everyone posts on a computer what you're asking is a lot more work than its worth on a phone or tablet.

Also it's not common for multiple generics in a list to be stacking five upgrade slots of the exact same loadout. In fact, the only time I imagine you'll see identical upgrades are on Brobots and U-boats.

Thankfully my desire to flavor U-boats with cheap unique crew cards means I can bypass the suggestion:

Snowflake U-boats (100)

Contracted Scout (35) - JumpMaster 5000

Deadeye (1), Proton Torpedoes (4), Extra Munitions (2), Boba Fett (1), R4 Agromech (2), Guidance Chips (0)

Contracted Scout (35) - JumpMaster 5000

Deadeye (1), Proton Torpedoes (4), Extra Munitions (2), 4-LOM (1), R4 Agromech (2), Guidance Chips (0)

Contracted Scout (30) - JumpMaster 5000

Deadeye (1), Plasma Torpedoes (3), Overclocked R4 (1), Guidance Chips (0)

isn't that like asked everyone to shorten all the upgrades acronyms?

while it's fast some people don't like reading that. so many cards and that's a lot of acronyms!!!

but everyone does it as they want and whats wrong with that

Superfluous entries in lists never bothered me, and it never even occurred to me someone would consider it a problem.

Sometimes the opposite annoys me; lists described so briefly that I don't know what is meant ("RV Pilot with VI, DF & MM, standard Tycho build, 2 Greens, + initiative bid")

Maybe it's just me, but I will tolerate some extra space if it means the crystal-clear summary of an online squadbuilder.
