Could a speed 2 squadron formation work independently of ships.

I've been thinking about throwing 3 bwings, 2 Yt-1400's and Jan Ors into a formation and moving them independently of the rest of the fleet.

The goal is to have a faster fleet and this ball of squadrons moving slowly towards where the engagement is to occur. Possibly flanking the enemy.

I was wondering if anyone had tried this strategy and what the results were. I'm concerned they'd be easily destroyed or never reach the point of engagement.

You can do it with Imperials. Take Rhymer and several firesprays and just move them in the squadron phase. OK Rhymer won't be able to move & fire so unless you have already reached your combat destination you loose a black dice but keep 2,4 or 6 blue against ships. The extra range afforded by Rhymer means you can control an area with a radius of Medium range + speed 3 which (from memory) is about 15". If you don't use rogue squadrons the radius reduces to just short-medium range with say Tie bombers.

When you do this with Rebels the threat radius can be Speed 4 + range 1 for YT2400s so just over 12". But once you loose the rogue rule the radius is just range 1 so less than 3". Add to this the lousy movement of B-Wings and you run the risk of being ignored or pinned. Jan can stop some of the pinning but if the enemy surround your group then Jan has to go after one half of the enemy or the other laving some portion pinned and maybe leaving Jan out on her own for next turn when she gets picked on.

With no ship nearby to hand out squadron commands your independent fighters are more predictable as to when they get to move and will also not benefit from friendly flak support from ships.

I like B-Wings and run them a lot with Yavaris close by acting as slow moving ship killers in front of several Nebulons to deal with gate crashing ships or flankers. You can also use Independence to get them quickly to the combat area and with boosted comms they can usually benefit from a squadron command. Some fighters can be used on their own but I don't think B-wings work well without fleet support and synergy.

Nice video. I'm going to have to test it to see if Mad Cat is right that squadrons would be able to pull it apart.

The Imperials did forget to use the swarm rule for 5 or more attacks including the counter 2 rolls so Tycho probably should have died earlier and then the damaged interceptors could have pinned the B-wings for a turn.

Works well on a speed 1 VSD but against a speed 3 ISD or GSD or even worse a rebel AFII it is much less rewarding.
