Aces...aces everywhere

By Rear Admiral Nerf, in X-Wing

So everyone is playing some kind of palps aces list. While I'm also guilty of it too I am kind of tired of 3 out of my 4 matches being a mirror match in competitive play. Anyone had any luck against palps with out bringing a palps of their own. I've tried tie swarms with cracks shot and they didn't fair well. I've tried stress lists they did slightly better but they lose hard to other things. Help me be a special snowflake!

The last "Generics" that can do anything are

1. K-wing, TLT+Tactician

2. Contracted Scout Jmpmaster, aka U-boat.

3. Black Crack Tie

4. the doomsday Z (the one you ignore hunting the aces, but exactly the one who always rolls all hits...)

results: A smoking pile of whatever plastic aces they brought, floating in a stream of salty tears.

after action review: You are now the special snowflake of your dreams and put aces lists in the grave by about turn 4

4 Scimitar Bombers w/ Homing Missiles, EM, GC, and Seismic charges.

Are you wanting to do Imperial only?

Col Vessery, 2 FO's, and a Tie Adv. ace is fun.

Maybe ask to play a non-tournament level game? They are quite fun to break out of the mold.

Oh that's not an issue we have lots of casual games on non-tourney days. Just the last store champ I went to 5 out of my 7 games were against palps aces in one form or another. I don't mind flying against it I just get tired of the mirror match. On a positive note the guy who won was flying 3 t-65 xwings and a tlt ywing which was pretty baller.

Fly Scum. Palob is your friend in this case, a GOOD friend! So are a couple of feedback Z's, and whatever else you'd like to sprinkle in.

The best way to deal with aces is to deny them actions (which turns out works great on munitions focused lists, too!) and the best way to deny actions is going to be blocking. If you fly a lot of Aces, take some time dedicated to practicing blocking. Count your casual games a win if you get good blocks in, not necessarily killing ships.

You can decide if this is a strategy you want to use in your competitive matches, but even if you don't block the practice will help you avoid getting blocked.

I really like a blocking focused Jumpmaster, the big base and barrel roll and crew slot for intelligence agent and illicit slot for inertial dampeners makes for the best blocker I have ever used.

Palob and Torkil are very good at 'suppressing' action-dependent aces.

Ghost with TLT seems pretty good against Aces too.

One of my favourite lists I dubbed "Turd Squadron"

Kavil — Y-Wing 24

Predator 3

Twin Laser Turret 6

Bomb Loadout 0

Unhinged Astromech 1

Proton Bombs 5

Ship Total: 39

Palob Godalhi — HWK-290 20

Predator 3

Twin Laser Turret 6

Tactician 2

Moldy Crow 3

Ship Total: 34

Torkil Mux — HWK-290 19

Twin Laser Turret 6

Tactician 2

Ship Total: 27

We have a tournament series here in Southern Ontario(Canada) called "Store Wars" that was run by 6 local stores who ran 2 tournaments each. We ended up having somewhere around 70 players participate in the series. At the end of that the top 16 players played an invitational. Both my son and I were in the top 16. I actually finished 2nd for the series.

I won the top 16 tournament with "Turd Squadron". I haven't lost a single game to a Palp Aces list of any kind. I placed 3rd twice with the list and won the top 16 tournament. My son ran it at a local SC this year and finished top 4. A friend of mine ran it at his local SC and won with it.

It will have a bit of a tough time with triple toilet seats or builds with lots of HP to chew through but it has no issues with aces lists or brobots.

Edit to fix how the list pasted in.

Wrong.

-Proto A still has the same role it had before

-Green As just won a regional, so dont count them out yet

-Gold Y still has a place with stresshog, just like it did before (although grey might be the answer here soon)

and thats just the rebels

As much fun as that looks, you may run into the problem of relying on the big base barrel roll, or that you opponents think it isn't fun to play against. If you are really wanting a block workout, Guri is a surprisingly good choice. Aces out generics hard, but the PS5 still lets you get good blocks on the traditional ace ships. Small base is harder to work with, but you get a boost to go with your barrel roll!

The master level challenge is of course the naked Binarye Pirate blocker. No repositioning, small base, but moving first. If you can get that to work you can claim your black belt.

My other build that does well against them is my double decimator list.

Captain Oicunn (42)
Predator (3)
Gunner (5)

Rear Admiral Chiraneau (46)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Darth Vader (3)

Total: 100

I won my local SC this year with this list and 2 friends of mine also did well with it. 1 of them won another SC with it and the other one finished 2nd at another.

Dual VCX with gunner/fcs completely wrecks palp aces.

The stresshog is unique, not generic

Proto A is a blocker, can give you that, but the decline of Big Ship meta they aren't that epic in stomping their hopes and dreams.

Green A is more of a wild card. Can't say prockets are a gamebreaking wonder. Good, but not consistent.

Take the regional lists and simply count the points spent on aces and on generics. Not even close to aces.

I'm gonna try this list on Friday. Seems like fun. (100)

Darth Vader (36) - TIE Advanced

Lone Wolf (2), TIE/x1 (0), Engine Upgrade (4), Advanced Targeting Computer (5)

"Deathrain" (35) - TIE Punisher

Extra Munitions (2), Proximity Mines (3), Conner Net (4)

Sigma Squadron Pilot (29) - TIE Phantom

Advanced Sensors (3), Intelligence Agent (1)

Probably get me arse handed to me though.

Connor nets with sabine are a fast train to brown town for aces. Taking 2 and losing actions then being predictable and easy to block next turn is a hell of a thing when your two biggest fears are being predictable and having no actions.

Palp Aces/Imp Aces increased table time is due to, in my opinion, the surge in triple uboat lists since their release. They were always there, I've been effectively playing the list competitively since last summer, but it's explosion in the past couple weeks is a knee-jerk reaction to the boats (I don't want to be in arc and get hit with 4 hits 90% of the time, so I'll take high PS arc dodgers!). The next tournament will see lists balance to take them into account though, so fear not.

If you really need a counter to Aces: instant (or guaranteed) damage/action deny (blocking, stress, token theft) lists are typically their bane.

Nah, it's not U-boats being weak against aces, it's U-boats eliminating the natural predator of PalpAces, namely Stress-Kwings

Nah, it's not U-boats being weak against aces, it's U-boats eliminating the natural predator of PalpAces, namely Stress-Kwings

I believe that to be a multiplying effect.

the trick against palp aces is to ignore dice

Conner nets (be they deathrain or sabine)

10264246_10156557716045142_6072800329970

Jumpmasters (tons o dice, but especially a bumpmaster with feedback)

12901510_10156683401350142_1284937198880

and of course, auto-correct ghost w/title (automatic 4 damage past thrusters; palpatine everything)

Or maybe the fact that the greatest abilities tend to be given to top PS pilots is a flaw, just as the fact that Autothrusters made jousters a direct counter matchup to both jousters AND turrets is the answer to "why palp aces"?
