Switchups

One of the advantages of non-tournament play is that the rules are set by you and your opponent, which means you can change things up and fix things. After seeing a few threads about face-down upgrades, I got to wondering: what other little things do people do around here to tweak the ruleset to their liking?

My main one is one we've done for coming up for a year now: we use the Initiative Token. It passes to the opponent every round and thus initiative shuttles between players.

Off the bat this adds a huge amount of depth to equal pilot skill clashes as they alternate having the information advantage. Instead of a Tycho Versus Carnor conflict being a case of set one to PS 8.1 at the start of the game, now it's a geniune back and forth. It's very simple and adds a lot of nuance. I'm actually surprised FFG don't do it. Furthermore, it's been very good at making Veteran Instincts less appealing.

Added bonus is no such thing as an initiative bid any more, so if you've got a few spare points no reason not to go crazy with them.

What are your tweaks to the ruleset?

We have done lost of thing .... gas clouded, ground based auto laser turrets, docking at space stations, moving asteroids, as many asteroid as you can fir on a table, 3 way player vs player vs player. 29 point 10 player last my standing. etc etc etc

I went to a tournament last year where if your opposition had the same unique pilot/crewmember as you, then you could bot use their ability for the game.

Was really fun and also meant lots of people brought different pilots than the usual.

ohhh yes I have been thinking and remembered more..... Movie canon only. 100- your age in points. Random upgrade card on the game mat to pick up as you fly over them

after playing a lot of Imperial Assault skirmish, I've also wondered why initiative doesn't just alternate each round in X-Wing.

In my opinion it could only improve things.

Because some lists depend on if the fly second or shoot first ... I know people they fly 96 points so can always decide

What if they're outright beaten on PS?

Have you ever flown GENERICS ONLY? I love it. It's even better when you play with more than 100 pts as it seems like a real battle. X-wings aren't bad ships at this point as you don't have all these crazy aces boosting and dancing all over. I have to admit that it's one of the times the game feels more like Star Wars.

Missions are always fun to me. There are some really good ones out there on Mission Control.

The campaigns in the epic ships are also a lot of fun. They can teach those that haven't played Epic yet the rules for the big ships.

I like playing Cinematic games with epic ships. I like to have one person make the lists for both sides to make it fair. Big ships with lots of generics swooping around is a ton of fun.

The Heroes of the Aturi Cluster is absolutely fantastic! If you haven't tried it, you should. Even the tournament die hards like to play every now and again. This alone has pulled players back into the game that had quit.

Dagobah Dave's Trench Run scenario is really fun.

Random list generator for both players can be really entertaining. You can fly in new and weird ways.

B-list games can be fun. Always wanted to try Kir Kanos or those Scyks, but didn't just want to get stomped? Agree to play with B-lists and play with all those odd ships you always wanted to try out.

We've always operated on the list building phase being the first half of a match, by which I mean every game has a fresh built squad. Means that stagnation isn't really a problem. The T-65 does fine here.

Hidden information is the way to go, only reveal cards after declaring their use. Seeing a formation of Interceptors headed your way and not knowing who, if any, is Soontir until the trap is sprung adds a lot of good tension to the game. Are those Y-Wings carrying torpedoes or are they on a bombing run?

Hidden pilots could be awkward with baseplates. Hidden upgrades is an interesting one.

Just change the baseplate when the need arises.

And by hidden, I do mean hidden. Not face down so your opponent can see you have a torpedo, but not what kind. Out of sight, so they can't see what you are packing.

Hidden sounds good except for us old farts that have a hard time remembering what we have when the cards are face up!

Forcing 100-age for points would SUCK beyond all measure. Or do you really think that those of us who are 40+ are really so much better at the game that a teenager or 20 something would need another ship or two to make it a fair fight?

A better idea, try 50+age for squadron totals instead :)
