Shellacing Cardboard Pieces?

By Aro2220, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

I was at a game shop where someone showed me Imperial Assault for the first time. They had their pieces in a tackle box, cards sleeved, figures painted and the cardboard pieces like the doors and tokens were shellaced.

It was pretty impressive. Now I've bought the game and a couple of expansions and I wanted to shellac things if possible.

I live in Canada and both Amazon.ca and Walmart.ca would ship to my door...which product would I use to do this? What tools would I need? His pieces really seemed nicely protected...

I really like Krylon acrylic crystal clear. Dries in 10 min.

I use the flat on figures and it is excellent. Future for gloss parts.

Personally, I would use the flat on the map pieces, too. I find the glare of gloss to be difficult to see in most light situations.

Couldn't find the Rustoleum Gloss Clear at walmart.ca or amazon.ca (well, they wanted $25+ for it which is a little nuts)

But I did find Krylon...I think this is what you were talking about, right?

How do I use this stuff?

Wouldn't that discolor/damage the cardboard? If it doesn't, what about the puzzle joints? Does the extra layer of (whatever that stuff is) hinder board assembly?

I had the same concern, but it works fine. You could potentially see some yellowing after years depending on brand and specific type of clearcoat, but there has been no problem with warping or distortion of the joints for me.

How do I use this stuff?

Yes, that is the Krylon Spray I use. (Disclaimer: I have not tried this on these map pieces, but I have used it on a wide variety of materials: many types of paper & cardboard, various inks, stains and paints and it works very well. Also, I have not considered doing this because I am careful with my gaming stuff, but if I was going to spray coat the maps, Krylon is the product I would use.)

To spray, set up the pieces so they are standing on end. You want to avoid spraying down on some thing. The pieces should be parallel to the spray can.

Spray light coats (2-3 should do it). start spray off the piece and stop when past it. Avoid starting or ending spraying on the object as you may get uneven coverage. I would also avoid getting much on the edges because it will add dimension and the puzzle pieces fit tight already. If done with light coats, you should have no issue with warping as the board they use is fairly dense.

Do this in a well ventilated area.

I hope this helps.
