Ship has R4 Agromech (scum). Ship red moves and is stressed. After it gains a Focus token via mind-link from another ship taking a focus action.

In the combat phase is it legal to spend that focus token on (nothing) to get a TL to use to fire off any ordinance that it has equipped?

Yes. Agromech just says you 'acquire a target lock'; This is not the same as taking the Target Lock action, and thus isn't prevented by the stress.

If R4 Agromech instead read something along the lines of "After spending a focus token, immediately take a free target lock action" then in your scenario you would not be able to use R4's ability.

Apparently I stopped reading at the acquire target lock part and missed the last part about ordinance. Quarrel has it here, this indeed does not work. While you can spend a focus token to change no results, you still have to do that spending in a valid window for a focus token to be used, which in an attack(which R4 agromech requires) is well after the point where you've chosen a target and weapon. The stress and Attani mindlink are irrelevant to what actually stops this from working.

I am trying to make a list to use the attani Mink link and thought I may have found a way to acquire a TL from a focus to blow off some missiles/torps...

No. You must have a reason to spend a Focus token even if spending that token will do you no good.

Note that for R4 to work you need to be attacking a ship when you spend the Focus token meaning you've already paid the cost to make that attack. For your Ordnance that requires a TL that means you've already passed that point.

I know that when I first read this my initial thought was "How are you getting a Focus token when that ship you are Mind-linked to had just picked up a Stress token." Then I realized the newly stressed ship may be performing a green maneuver to dump that stress before taking the Focus Action to get that Focus Token.
