End Phase order

By Lyianx, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So were getting more things that happen during the End Phase. Is there and order or steps within the End Phase in which things happen, or is it all determined by the player who has initiative?

Also, does Cloaking Device (the scum one) actually happen in End Phase, since it just says "end of round"? If it is in End Phase, when does it happen?

If there is a timing conflict (e.g. two Corrans firing) then it's determined by initiative.

There's no clear answer as to when the Scum Cloaking Device breaks and whether the token from Stygium would be discarded or not.

There's effectively 3 parts to the End Phase: Start, During, and End. If player A has initiative the sequence of events will be:

  1. Any abilities from Player A that specify "At the start of the End phase".
  2. Any abilities from Player B that specify "At the start of the End phase".
  3. Any abilities from Player A that specify "During the End phase", remove focus and evade tokens from Player A's ships (these can happen in any order Player A wishes).
  4. Any abilities from Player B that specify "During the End phase", remove focus and evade tokens from Player B's ships (these can happen in any order Player B wishes).
  5. Any abilities from Player A that specify "At the end of the End phase".
  6. Any abilities from Player B that specify "At the end of the End phase".
Whether the Scum Cloaking Device occurs at 5/6 or after, I'm uncertain, but either way you'd keep the token from Stygium Particle Accelerator.

Ahh... but do you? That's the big question. This is one of the latest problems FFG's rather sloppy wording has created. "At the end of the round" is when exactly? Normally they're pretty definitive with their timings, but in this case they've just created a big, blurry grey area.

Don't be surprised if they clarify the Cloaking Device failure to happen before Focus and Evade tokens are removed. I can't see Stygium Particle Accelerator keeping a token around for the next round.

Nor can I. Im willing to bet an FAQ update will change the cloaking device to trigger at the start of the end phase.

I would actually say that "at the end of the round" is right in the middle of the end phase, when tokens are getting cleaned up. Rules state that multiple effects on the same ship with the same window ordered according to the controlling player, and you'd be a fool not to decide to roll against the cloaking device after clearing tokens. So, really I'm close to Firespy on this one: "at the end of each round" is effectively (if not literally) after the rest of the end phase.

Hence I would allow the evade token to persist until the next round. If I were a judge that's how I would call it until a FAQ contradicts me by saying it's the beginning of the end phase.

I got poked over here from Armada... (Don't worry, I wont' stay long...) Since we had a similar issue in regards to Rieekan and his End of Round vs Status Phase and such like that...

For us, it was resolved as such (and may work here too as an Explanation) :

(From the X-Wing Rules Guide, Page 16)

ROUND

A single game round consists of four phases resolved in the following order: Planning phase, Activation phase, Combat phase, End phase. The first round begins after setup is completed.

Which means:

ROUND START

- Planning Phase

- Activation Phase

- Combat Phase

- End Phase

ROUND END

Something happening at "End of Round" doesn't happen until the End Phase is finished, because the Round is not Ended until the Phase is Done...

Of course, my Reading of the Rules here has absolutely no context involved, as I do not know the Cards in Question - only reading the Wording of the Rule and the assumption it states "at End of Round" and answering the question of when the "End of Round" should be.

(And with that, I'll go away :) )

Here is the card in question

(for the Armada guy)

I do not see how you can be at the "end of each round" or End of a round, for that matter, unless everything that falls inside of the round is finished. So the end phase is the last thing you do in the round. Once the End phase is done, the round ends, roll for the card.

The end of the round is after all phases are complete. Then end of round triggers activate.
