List Building for Dengar Mission?

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

Hi All,

So, I want to play the Dengar Mission that comes with the Jumpmaster 5000. It has a preset Dengar and I want to go with that for at least a few missions. The rest of it is 100 pts of Rebels, though. My question is....what would be a good list to try out here?

I DO NOT want a list that is just going to auto win. I want to make a nice and balanced list that will be hard for Dengar to win against. I DO NOT just want to load up with TLT's. In fact, I'd like to avoid having TLT's in there completely.

Here's what I was thinking:

Garven Dreis w/ R2 Astromech

Red Squadron X-wing w/ R2

Green A-wing w/ Test Pilot, PTL, and Outmaneuver

Blue B-wing w/ FCS

Thoughts?

I don't have my mission with me, but is there a better load out for Dengar than the one he comes with? I know Rage isn't all that popular due to the stress, but he can do that Jump and remove all stress.

Ugh, people want to start more and more threads about ID, but no one wants to even comment on something reasonable about the actual game?

I like your list. I wonder if it would give Dengar a better chance if you replaced red squadron with two Z-95's instead. That would give two more guns for the rebels, but also two more targets for Dengar to kill. Since he only needs to take down three ships.

It really could depend on how you want to set up your rebel squad, you could go for a swarm(ish) build so that you can cover all of the hyperspace ports (or whatever they are called)

Or, you could focus more on an anti-PWT build (like an auto thruster based build)

However, your list isn't half bad. It has a lot of aspects in the game into one list. Garven's teamwork. A-wing's speed/maneuverability. And b-wing's punch.

Thanks guys! I'll try it tonight.

This is a high quality scenario, tell us. I think that Rebel should purchase at least 5 or even better 6 ships.

Well, this is research for my Casual X-wing podcast that I'm setting up. We record first episode this weekend. We will review the missions in Ghost and Dengar. I don't want to spoil it too much!

I have heard that if you go with a lot of Rebel TLT's that the game is just over. I know you can build a Rebel list that is meant to crush Dengar, but I just didn't want to do that. I'm on the fence about including Stress bot, though. Dengar can use his Jump ability to clear stress, so it might be worth it. Maybe.

I don't want to go with too many ships for Rebels, though, as it means easy victory for Dengar. The Bounty Hunter only has to kill 3 enemy ships, so throwing out cheap filler just means easy victory for Dengar. I want it to be a challenge and think 4 decent ships is probably the best. That means low PS unique pilots or generics. I didn't want to go with too many PS 2 guys as we are going to change the Dengar list after a couple times with what they recommend. If he goes for Predator, it will be bad.

Bcons had the jist of it when I built the list. I was going for Garven for some syngergy, but not really reliant on anything too crazy. The B-wing can add some punch (especially with FCS) and take some hits. The A-wing will be really zippy and not a bad option with Outmaneuver and PTL. Not OP, but not ignorable. I don't think the X-wings are a bad choice, either. I can't go with a crazy ace or it will mean the rest of the list is weak. The X-wing has pretty good maneuverability and will be able to chase after Dengar pretty well. A lot of B-wings might not be the best option as he can just arc dodge around and blast away. The X-wings have good hitting power to go with their mobility. Lots of A-wings probably won't have the hitting power to last in the fight, unless I went with some Proton Rockets. At that point, it just might be too hit or miss for the Rebels. I.E. Dengar either gets blasted fast or is able to keep them at bay and easily picks them off. So, I don't think X-wings are a bad choice. I think the list has a little bit of everything to be a good All Comer type list that can pull off a victory, but not be too easy.

It has to have 4 Rebel ships. That means if I go for a big Ace, then one of my ships has to be a Z-95 or so. I think it makes it too easy for Dengar to kill the Z-95 and then just go after your other 2 non-Aces.

Oh, I like your Keyan Farlander! Pretty cool use of Rage and Chopper.

I wonder, though, about 2 B-wings with Shuttle. Will it be too easy to arc dodge? Could easily swap one for an X-wing. That might be a really tough list to win against with Dengar.

Thanks for all the help, guys. I managed to get two games in with it. I was hoping for more, but people really wanted to do HotAC. I don't blame them. I played Dengar for both games vs. two different opponents. I think it was both of their first times vs. Dengar and they were my first times flying vs. them.

The first game had his list soar up the middle, with the A-wing boosting up closer. I turned in to try to get some R1 shots on him, but that turned out to be stupid. The A-wing blocked me and the rest came up and got some serious shots at me. I lost my shields in this exchange. It was bad. I also Raged too early and had a hard time getting out of there. I was trying to save the special jump points for when I was really hurt, but didn't realize that I was in a really bad spot and should've jumped! Dengar managed to kill Garven before he died. So...first game was a solid win to the Rebel list who moved up in a solid group and I failed to move clever enough. Garven passing the Focus to the B-wing (who had TL) really nailed me in the first game early.

Second game had me turning away from Rebels at the beginning as I was trying to Gonk up a bit. The Rebels had the two X-wings one one side of asteroids and the other ships coming up behind Dengar. I ended up arcing towards the X-wings and Raging. I hurt Garven and then managed to kill him after he fired at me. I did get a number of TL on me that turn, too. I lost some shields. I jumped at that point to lose all that was on me and try to get into a better position. My opponent was too piecemeal and didn't really approach me as a united front. I was able to use Jumps and Barrel Rolls to evade the majority of shots and weaken all the enemy ships. Even then, it was really tough. I had taken a bunch of hits. At one point, I was lucky enough to get the A-wing at R1 with no one else facing me. I Raged and managed to one shot the A-wing when his dice failed him. He had K-turned and had no actions. I ended up S-looping to stay away from the B-wing and fire at the X-wing. I knocked the X-wing down to one hull with Rage! The B-wing hit me and knocked me down to 1 hull point. The X-wing had K-turned and fired at me. One hit...and I evaded it! I used the Pain Bot to get the free little shot back, and managed to kill him! Three ships down and I won.

I think it was a good Rebel list to fly vs. Dengar. It wasn't overpowered and it wasn't weak. I think the Dengar build they gave wasn't the best, but it wasn't terrible.

which list did your opponents fly?

Garven Dreis w/ R2 Astromech

Red Squadron X-wing w/ R5

Green A-wing w/ Test Pilot, PTL, and Outmaneuver

Blue B-wing w/ FCS

I had to switch the second R2 for an R5 as I think I only have one. Well, I could only find one (thought I had two). I figured it was the best 1 pt besides R2. I thought the R2 was more important for Garven, as he's the one that needs the actions to get a Focus.

Garven and the B-wing were nasty together. I didn't like facing it.

The A-wing was annoyingly effective in the first game. Not a ton of damage, but enough, especially since I didn't get enough green dice. Chipping away is effective.

There is one thing I totally forgot: Integrated Astromech. All the X-wings should've had them. I don't fly X-wings enough to remember. It probably would've made a difference. I think.

I wanted to play a few more games and optimize the Dengar build from other than what was the default list. I was going to give my opponent a chance to make any list they wanted, but I only got the two games in. The list was quite serviceable, which was good.
