If Red Squad gets an EPT slot, would that be enough?

No, because the very expensive ace x-wings still won't be able to reposition to take on the cheaper Imperial aces.

Except that's an outside-the-scope-of-the-problem issue.

If you're looking at Red Squadron, you're considering a PS4 pilot who's never going to be able to move reactively. And for that matter, there are a whole gamut of unique pilots - from Tarn Mison up to Jek Porkins - who are never really going to be able to do that, even if given free boosts or barrel rolls.

Essentially, it boils down to "how do you make jousting work?" - or possibly a more philosophical "do you actually want to make jousting work?". To an extent, FFG's response seems to be to make the 'head-on' joust the preserve of the missile- and torpedo- bombers.

I'm not trying to say flying back and forth in straight lines makes for a particularly fun game - part of the reason I'm not so impressed with the Targeting Astromech - but at the same time the solution to one side having more reactive action-manoeuvres isn't to give more to the other side.

Now the 'swarm-style' jousters have a second option - blocking - but a squad primarily built on medium snubfighters only gets 4-5 warm bodies and struggles to do that.

Instead, it's a question of "Right. Due to guessing correctly what you're going to do, I have got you bang to rights in my firing arc, Sonny Jim". The problem is that even if you manage that, with the assorted upgrades a TIE interceptor can stack up these days, you need to essentially get your entire 4-ship squad lined up on the same TIE/in ace to have any meaningful chance of getting through agility 4+focus+evade+autothrusters+Palpatine, so you can't even split your squad to cover two possible options in order to get at least one shot, because by themselves one shots is next to useless.

Part of the problem is that there is next to no difference in firepower between the major ship classes - turrets, arc dodgers and jousters - and arc dodgers need that agility to avoid being nothing but tinfoil targets for the turrets like Han and Dash.
