Proper wingman for Dengar?

By surly88, in X-Wing

Tbh I simply think this forum needs way more threads not focused around ID's :P

OT though, I played a few games with Dengar recently, but simply can't find a proper way to build the list.

Dengar itself has a lot of cool choices, so that's not much of an issue. My favourite build runs him with PO, PTL, Engine, K4, Unhinged and depending on points an Illicit.

The problem is more what I should run with him.

I tried 3 Z-95 with and without Feedbacks, and I didn't really like them. It simply felt like they had a hard time gaining their spend points back.

Another thing I tried was a fully loaded Contracted Scout, but when playing against the real U-Boat list it didn't stand much of a chance.

Lastly I tried 4-Lom, but he didn't really belong there, since he couldn't keep up with Dengar at all. Also he's a rather easy target and provides a lot of points for your opponent if he gets him. Shooting him and half of Dengar provides a lot of points, so Dengar almost has to kill everything left.

I considered N'Dru Suhlak and Guri, but I'm not sure if they can profide something useful for the list. Same goes for various Hound's Tooth builds, but my main problem here is that they get me to 100 points easily, while I'd like to keep 2-3 points for initiative.

Would be cool if I could get some input, I'm sure a lot of people tried some cool combinations with him :)

What about Bobba?

I've been running bobba and boosk with bobba built as per the below

Boba Fett (50) - Firespray-31

Veteran Instincts (1), Ion Bombs (2), Tactician (2), Glitterstim (2), Engine Upgrade (4)

You can strip things out as required but he is great for getting right up in someone's face

I like him with guri and with feedback Zs. Maybe try this?

Kath Scarlet (Scum) (38)

Veteran Instincts (1)

K4 Security Droid (3)

Engine Upgrade (4)

Dengar (33)

Push the Limit (3)

4-LOM (1)

Unhinged Astromech (1)

Engine Upgrade (4)

Punishing One (12)

Total: 100

I could see something like this ...

Dengar (33)
Push the Limit (3)
Unhinged Astromech (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Punishing One (12)

Boba Fett (Scum) (39)
Adaptability (0)
Tactician (2)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Total: 98

Not sure about Boba in a field full of ordnance though. Also, missing the super crazy crew slot and illicit is kinda bad.

I like him with guri and with feedback Zs. Maybe try this?

You played him with Guri and Feedbacks? How did it go for you with them?

Would be really interested how it works for you, especially how the list plays against the 3 U-Boat list.

I tried him out with both Boba and IG-88 variants, both pretty fun lists to play. Also double TLT y-wings if you need to focus on your Dengar flying.

I had reasonable success with IG-88B as Dengar's wingman. It's quite a light IG-88 loadout, but it offers some things that Dengar doesn't - Agility 3 and Autothrusters being key among them.

IG-88B (36)
Adaptability (0)
Fire-Control System (2)
"Mangler" Cannon (4)
Autothrusters (2)
Total: 44

I like the idea of IG88-B as well. A completely different ship from the Jumpmaster so you sort of cover your bases. The "gunner" ability is also priceless against Imperial aces.

I´m not completely sold on Dengar taking up 56 points however (title/PtL/K4/Unhinged/EU). I just don´t feel he has the firepower or staying power for that amount of points. His ability becomes somewhat redundant if he´s arc dodging or running away. At PS9 he also might have to spend an extra point on initiative to be moving after a lot of the 9s out there and will be moving after the 10s and 11s of course.

I wonder if it might be worth it to skip the Engine Upgrade on Dengar to be able to field a 48 point IG88 (makes a huge difference). Sure, Dengar can only barrel roll to relocate but he will then have an action left to focus (plus the K4 target lock of course). I just feel Dengar exceeds his "sweet spot" when he passes the 52-53 point mark.

How about my favorite Palob Godalhi build?

- Palob w/ Lone Wolf, TLT, RecSpec, Cloaking Device, MC title, Stealth Device (39pts)

Don't knock it before you try it! Unlimited focus plus blank reroll and the possibility to steal evades actually makes stelth device on Palob resonably reliable. Add illicit cloak for repositioning if you want to take shots or just be reeeally hard to hit while you keep stealing tokens. Just keep you distance from the big guy to keep up lone wolf, some might say that cramps Dengar's style of racing around though.

This leaves five points for your illicit/torpedo on Dengar, or a huge initiative bid :P

Pairing up the bounty hunters seems aesthetically pleasing - IG-88 or Boba Fett seems like a natural pairing. If you're worried about torpedoes, the aggressor is a nice one, too.

Palob is a very nice idea. His ability to 'disarm' jumpmaster torpedoes is very useful, too - he can fly in, cloak, snag one guys focus token and no-one in their right mind will waste a torpedo on a focused 5-green-dice defender, especially if Lone Wolf is running.

Dengar with K4 and Push The Limit can afford to use both actions to jig about a bit, so provided you're careful, maintaining separation shouldn't be hard.

Glitterstimm is probably not a bad call - that one time you get blocked, you can get fair mileage out of dengar as you should still have a target lock plus glitterstimm's offensive and defensive focus

I'm tempted to try

YV-666: · Moralo Eval (34)

Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Maneuvering Fins (1)
· 4-LOM (1)
· Zuckuss (1)
K4 Security Droid (3)
Feedback Array (2)

That's going alongside a Gonk build:

JumpMaster 5000: · Dengar (33)

Push The Limit (3)
· "Gonk" (2)
· Punishing One (12)
Unhinged Astromech (1)

No idea whether it'll work, though!

I've been using Guri with LW, title, sensor jammer, AT, Stims.

She is fairly fast and surprisingly durable. Yet provides a tempting target at 41pts. If my opponent goes for her she dances and takes an inordinate effort to take down. The whole time they do that they basically gift table position to Dengar. In the Super build (EU PTL K4, Unhinged Stims) Dengar has been great at dodging and able to hit like a train.

His ability doesn't actually trigger a huge amount against better opponents I find as they are wary if his arc. It does though create a massive no go zone for enemy ships that can be used to your advantage though. Even when not triggering, his ability can have a big impact on a game.

I've toyed with lightening Dengar a but dropping engine and Stims. This gives enough points for a pair of Hired Guns with unhinged and Dorsal Ywings, probably with title. Fast enough to keep up with Dengar and going at PS4 able to contribute their damage potential before a lot of ships. Not sold on this idea yet as I have not flown it and with it coming to 100pts you lose any initiative bid.

I ran Boba Fett tonight with VI and Engine and he paired nicely with Super Dengar.

Indeed. It's a balancing act. Scum Boba Fett has issues with torpedo boats - although with engine upgrade you can still dodge arcs and you can afford to take a single torp hit without too many ill effects - but he's an absolute bugger against swarms. Slam into them and even if you let yourself get blocked and you'll still cut them to pieces with so many rerolls - very nice as swarms are often an Achilles heel of large ships.

Thanks for the replies!

I guess I'll try Boba and Guri out as soon as I'll find time :)

I had reasonable success with IG-88B as Dengar's wingman. It's quite a light IG-88 loadout, but it offers some things that Dengar doesn't - Agility 3 and Autothrusters being key among them.

This one I would choose to go alongside 56 point dengar. Only problem is that those IG's just don't cut it vs torpedo's.

I wonder if a bare bones Serrisu would be worth it? Maybe with VI on her, but that's it. She would help him stay alive and perhaps allow him to choose to joust more often and use his ability. The only problem I see is that she's 20 pts and what else will you go with in the list?

I saw someone won a Store Champ with 2 U-boats and Serrisu, so it's not a daft idea. I know many don't rate Serrisu, but she's one of the few defensive buffs out there (remember the Tyranny of Red Dice article?). She might allow Dengar to use his ability more often. Don't load her up with too much or she just becomes a target and not worth the points.

I've had good luck with IggyB, Bossk, and Moralo w/mangler and boba crew.

I tried this list once and it was quite the fun:

Dengar (33)
Predator (3)
Gunner (5)
R5-P8 (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Punishing One (12)
Trandoshan Slaver (29)
Boba Fett (1)
Outlaw Tech (2)
Greedo (1)
Feedback Array (2)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Total: 99

I plan on trying the following (similar to what others have stated):

Dengar

PTL, Unhinged Astromech, K4, EU, Glitterstim, Title

Guri

Lone Wolf, Title, Autothrusters, Sensor Jammer, Cloaking Device

I figure try and bait out the alpha strike against Guri, 5 greens with autothrusters and sensor jammer should survive, and if they don't take the bait, they will likely face range one shots from Guri and Dengar next turn.

I've enjoyed running this to pretty good effect. While 2-2 isn't great, it completely shut down triple Aces (Fel, Jax, Inquisitor) and stood tough against a three Xwing build with Janson, Wedge and Poe. First loss was against an Inquisitor led swarm where the guys dice were hot, mine were cold and I made two small maneuver errors that ended up being big. The other loss was against Dengar/Talonbane where everything was set up perfect and dice got in the way haha. The missiles on Fett are more there because I had seven points left and not much to do with them.

All of my opponents complained about the high PS scores as it messed up what they were doing in their builds. The trip-ace player had a hard time recovering with Fel going before Fett :)

I took Dengar and Kavil to the Hoth Open as Kavil is an outside sniper who frees up space for Dengar who wants to joust. Went 3-3 in very tough competition, but all 3 losses were super close and I made a few tactical errors with this new list.

Kavil had VI, TLT, engine, unhinged, bomb loadout and one seismic. Worked great because Kavil can outfly may opponents with PS9, plenty of green moves, and a boost. Plus, the bomb deters chasing and I hit 1-2 ships with the seismic on every game.

Kavil at PS9 with a 4 red dice TLT is also a great ace hunter and can shed a few shields off an opponent before Dengar attacks, increasing the likelihood of a crit getting through.

I would try something like this, just gotta be sure that you get those shields stacked up as much as you can before alpha strike. Bossk is good gunboat with even minimal upgrades and Dengar is prettt good in this setup too, just gotta play it very wisely!

Optional is to strip few things out from Dengar and pump up Bossk with something to make it also more viable option to attack against..

I also like the idea of a defensive Guri build. Something like:

Guri, Autothrusters, Virago, Sensor Jammer, EPT of your choice (Lone Wolf, perhaps).

The idea here is to give your opponent two bad targets to shoot at. If he shoots at Dengar, he's giving you free shots in return (assuming that you have positioned Dengar well). If he shoots at Guri, he may or may not get damage through against all of that defensive modification.

Dengar, PTL, Gonk, unhinged astromech, title, engine upgrade.

Bossk, VI, K4, tactician, engine upgrade.

100 points.

Gonk on Dengar is very, very strong.

I'm thinking two HWKs may be the way forward, specifically Palob and Torkhil.
