Fly Casual & You

By ObiWonka, in X-Wing

Just a friendly PSA about a misunderstood and misused concept.

Fly Casual is about your attitude during a game.

Fly Casual is not about making your opponent conform to your idea of Fly Casual.

If you move a ship, forget to do its action, and flip the next ship's dial and start to move it, you missed a trigger. It is OK to ask your opponent, "Oops, I forgot to lay down a Focus token, do you mind if I do?" You can look at your own dials, so merely flipping it isn't giving you any information you didn't already have. Backtracking half a step to take an action isn't a huge deal. However, if your opponent tells you, "Sorry, you missed the trigger," that's OK, too. That's a missed opportunity per the rules. If you are Flying Casual, you say, "OK, you're right," learn from the mistake and improve your game to not do it again in the future.

It is not Flying Casual to get mad about your opponent's decision and accuse them of not Flying [your definition of] Casual.

Fly Casual is about you; Fly Casual is not about your opponent.

So, to quote Han Solo: "I don't know. Fly Casual."

Fly casual was originally about selling t-shirts.

The short version is that if you tell your opponent off for not Flying Casual you are not Flying Casual.

Don't forget we're trying to push a new trend as well.

"Fly Casual, Crush Your Enemies, and Always Keep the Toilet Seat Down"

It's a massive improvement over the original moniker.

Never

Be

Militant

Using Fly Casual to bully others is not Fly Casual

The short version is that if you tell your opponent off for not Flying Casual any reason at all you are not Flying Casual.

FTFY.

If it's a casual game, walking away is a better option than starting a fight. If it's a competitive game, the TO is a better option than starting a fight. If you've arrived at a point where you're ready to tell someone off, let alone telling them off because they're taking the game too seriously, you're already representing the game (and yourself) poorly.

As ObiWonka says, Fly Casual is about how you approach the game and how you handle what happens in it. It's definitely not about lecturing someone else or forcing them to conform to your preferences.

Oh, and to ward off any accusations of No True Scotsman and rebut the snark that's already shown up: Fly Casual was a push to get players to remember that when you play in public you become an as ambassador for the game--so your conduct at the table should reflect the kind of community you want to build. It's the Golden Rule, or Wheaton's Law, or whatever you want to call it, just localized for our little corner of Nerd Kingdom.

[EDIT: Added a missing "not" that substantially changed the meaning of a sentence!]

Excellent post.

It's not fun or conducive to a casual, pleasant environment when your opponent throws a fit when he's denied a missed trigger.

It's best to just feed off their anger. Once someone gets on tilt, their mistakes snowball into others. It's just plastic spaceships, calm down and stop being mad at me for your own mistakes. I'd rather be stabbed in the back by a pleasant WAAC player than someone flying "casual" who calls you a douchebag when they forget Ysanne.

I fly militantly. I'm polite during games and if someone wants to deny me missed triggers that's fine because they're allowed to.

First rule of Fly Casual is you don't talk about Fly Casual during a game. :D

[EDIT] Added a smiley before the torches get lit.

actually its about ethics in tournament results

These topics about flying casual make it readily apparent that everyone considers themselves a fly casual player. It makes me suspicious that it actually means nothing, as it clearly can be twisted to encompass any sort of behavior at all.

Ha ha ha! Winners don't fly casual. High-Five!!!!

Which is funny because the original proponent of it threw a fit about a bunch of the Roanoke top 8 ID'ing.

Fly Casual players want to insist that denying triggers and other 'WAAC' stuff has a negative impact on the casual atmosphere of the game and that it's, "Just plastic spaceships, stop taking it so seriously." Meanwhile they're insulting others and throwing fits when they miss their triggers and get denied, or when someone takes an Intentional Draw as the rules allow them too.

Crush these players as best you can and watch them squirm. Kill them with kindness, just stand there and smile as they yell at you, and insist upon your rights. Ask /them/ why they're not flying casually.

i think ive posted it before on here but "fly casual" actually means "yo **** that guy" on here

Let's for a minute, between all the groan worthy dialogue, have a moment to praise the seriously so atrociously bad dialogue that was so bad it was good.

Ugh. Star Wars. The golden standard and low bar of dialogue. =)

Ha ha ha! Winners don't fly casual. High-Five!!!!

So the Roanoke 8 showed us.

From now on we have a new battle cry "the rules allow it"

No longer do we need to be civil or polite because the rules don't require it, truly a new golden age is dawning.

And when people cry foul we'll simply say git gud.

Bro if you want to talk about said event please do so in one of the ten plus other threads.

Mabey it applies to this but if it does I bet it applies even more in one of those threads.

I for one got the reference.

I derive a lot of pleasure in saying, "gut gud" after being told endlessly that the Phantom wasn't broken and that I just, "Had to get better and throw dice at it." Wielding that phrase as a weapon is funny to me.

The rules need to change about ID, not the players. Just like the nerfs/counter cards needed to happen to stop Fat Turretwing, not just expecting players to play stuff that's clearly inferior.
