Remember when X-Wing was fun?

By Goknights12, in X-Wing

I do too. It was a Thursday. And there was a lot less anger on the message boards.

Where have you been? Fun has been over costed by about 3 points since wave 4

HA! Dying

I remember it like it was yesterday.

Because I played X-Wing yesterday.

Remember when we had good topics on this board? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Never confuse the message boards for the game.

I know for myself there's some games I find I enjoy a lot less the more time I spend on their forums.

Son and I played the story mission that came with the ghost this weekend. Came down to a 1 hit point Black Squad against a 1 hit point Ghost.

So, yeah, I remember having fun.

Last night. Yes, that was it, last night. I had to wrack my brain for that memory. 'Twas so long ago, only the old and infirm, who had seen too many winters could remember. And the children laughed at us in disbelief.

Thing about x-wing... and this is THE reason I play the game.... I can't remember NOT having fun in a game of X-Wing. Unlike any of those games from that silly company in the UK, which routinely make we want to smash my models against a wall (I shamefully shattered my own warboss-chariot during a tournament once.) I'm usually engulfed in glee even when I'm getting my own ass handed to me at X-wing.

About 1 year ago. My brother, who is a devout gamer, invited me and some friends over to teach us this game. He set me up with a squadron featuring Soontir, because he knew I was an EU reader... (Extended Universe... not Engine Upgrade) and had, as he described it, "a dirty man-crush on Soontir". Guilty as charged.

In round 2... the first round of shooting I ever played... the guy playing Wedge broke the wrong way to follow a lower value target. And I found myself EXACTLY in his wake at range 1. When my dear brother informed me that the maneuver phase was over and we were now going to shooting, with me having the highest skill pilot, and I had to select a target - I think I was actually drooling when I picked up my handful of red dice and cackled maniacally... "IT'S NOT EVERYDAY YOU CATCH WEDGE ANTILLES WITH HIS PANTS DOWN! BWAHAHAHAH!!!!!"

These moments of cinematic beauty occur in EVERY game in X-Wing. If you aren't finding those moments, then I weep for your jaded heart.

1 year later.... mistakes were made. ALL the mistakes have been made. In fact, I seem to have run out of mistakes to make, which is why I can't wait for Imperial Veterans to ship so I can make a couple more mistakes!!

If now x win is not a funny game for some players...perhaps it is their fault

This game has always been fun. Do not let some meaningless 30+ page argument thread or the top 8 Roanoke situation ruin the game for you. Even if every single Regionals happens like Roanoke, you still have 99% of games unaffected by it.

The 30 page argument thread is so beautiful though.

Last year I was at a tournament at my flgs. There was a boy playing on the other table across from me and he was with his father. At one point I see the father laughing at his son's opponent while saying "Winners don't fly casual!" and he high-fives his son as they both walk away from the table. Obviously they won and the man who played just sat there slowely gathering his miniatures and tokens. He left the store shortly after that game. It was a sad thing to watch :(

I still have fun.

These boards have been a wee bit negtastic as of late.

everything's relative

everything's negative on the internet, but the top 8 ID regional thingy has people in a particularly gratuitous tizzy

And that man became...

Adolph Hitler.

This last week we've had sexism, cancer charities and their worth and the instant draw.

Of late is a good way to say it.

I played it with my buddies on Saturday. It was a lot of fun. We even brought in two new people who used our combined collection to play.

The key is staying away from tournaments. That's where the fun stops for pretty much anyone other than the personality types who have fun gaming the system for competitive advantage.

Notice that the current hooplah doesn't directly affect anyone who doesn't play at tournaments. I mean, it was still scummy, but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the game.

Why do I need to remember right now?

Actually... it might have been me. And what actually happened is that I learned to play with people who are not dicks.

Don't pooh pooh all tournaments. I have had nothing but good times at the Miniature Market events in St Lou. Haven't made it to their store champ but the every other month X-wing tourneys are great fun.
