Scum and Villainy Interview Series: Alex Davy post Wave 8

By Kelvan, in X-Wing

Wave 9 may not be out in 2016. Ouch.

Ouch, that's a rather longer gap between waves than I was expecting. Is that a worst case scenario, or the probable date? (I'm not currently able to listen to the podcast.)

Edit: Although I guess it would make sense if they're looking at a decent proportion of it being Rogue One related.

I took it as "It should come in 2016, but considering Wave 8 delays I can't promise it will."

I'll say that was my interpretation as well.

Bumping this thread, as it's _way_ more interesting than any of the discussions about Identification in Virginia.

I love how frank Alex is. I also appreciate that they try really hard to get things right, and as a whole, tend to land within a point either way.

It's not really their fault the game is now at the level that a point too cheap leads to ubiquity, whilst a point too much leads to relegation; that they get so close at all is praiseworthy.

The gotcha with EPTs on Jumpmasters should probably have been seen coming, though. ;)

I have a hard time with Jumpmasters. They're really strong. I'm happy that scum is finally seeing a high tier list. But they solidified this Ace meta which i personally don't find enjoyable. I like swarms.

Bear in mind these are preferences.

I know exactly what you mean. They next time you do an interview with the developers, would you be open to letting the forums know before hand so we can send you some possible questions for them?

The Kihrax and Star Viper are priced okay, the only problem is the pilots don't have good abilities.

As for the Scyk I blame the dial. It was named an interceptor hence the Ma-3 Scyk Interceptor yet it has no green turns.

The only ship that was over-costed was TIE Defender. It cost more than some large based ships.

Also NO TO FORMATS! I am sure once Resistance and 1stOrder get enough ships to fill out their faction you can split those factions apart from the primary and the balance of power will be evenly distributed.

I politely but 100% disagree with your first statement. Guri has an awesome ability and so does Xizor and Talonbane. Their abilities are great. Xizor has to be flown aggressively. It is their point costs that is hurting them. I knew the Kihraxz would be in trouble because it is priced like the x-wing. At 21 points plus the lame dial, everyone has been calling for a T-65 boost. The Kihraxz having a similar dial, a hull traded for a shield and only one point less was going to have the same issues. I don't know why they thought it was going to be any different then the X-wing. FFG is really having a difficult time pricing the pilots in this game. At first I didn't mind because I could see how in wave 1 they wouldn't want 5 X-wings on the board, but 7 waves later it has happened in every wave.

A new player getting ready for thier first tournament asked me how good jumpmasters are doing on the tournament scene. I felt really bad for her as new player telling her what it looked like. I was lucky, I got into the game right before tie swarm was dethroned by biggs walks, so by the time I got serious about the game the big fish had been beaten already.

Yes absolutely.

Probably.

I think Frank's comment about the Kihraxz was telling: its kind of old fashioned, too much like an X-Wing to be successful in the current meta. If it was more like a T-70 than a X-Wing -- that is, with boost -- than I would definitely play it more.

Re: Scyk, I'm not sure making it 2 points cheaper and giving it a free hull upgrade would still do it for me. Give it an illicit slot, now we're talking!

That depends if you're trying to fix just Talonbane, or the generics as well. Even with boost the generics won't be cost efficient enough to be compelling. The Palp Aces wingmen now all have cost efficiency around the same mark as a Kirhraxz or better, and that's before considering the benefit of having a higher PS.

With the title, why not both a hull and an illicit!

In both cases, the ships were slightly sub-par out of the gate relative to the other generic jousters in the game.

As Alex said, the meta has passed by generic cost efficient jousting ships. However, the reason why is slightly more difficult to precisely pin down. The underlying cause is the aces' cost effectiveness now rivals (or betters) the generics, and then they get repositional capabilities and higher PS essentially for free. The game hasn't passed by cost efficient generic jousters... the problem is that none exist anymore, so there are none to get taken. Torpedo JumpMasters are a sort of strange in-between hybrid that are actually very cost effective jousters until they run out of torps, and then they revert to being vanilla filler turrets.
