First Tournament ahead, and I have every expectation of enjoying it.

By MarekMandalore, in X-Wing

I have been an exclusively casual player of X-wing for three years or so. I started playing around Wave 2 or so. I live in the middle of nowhere, so store championships or even casual store events are almost completely out of the question.

Nevertheless, I have every intention of throwing my hat in the ring at an upcoming regional event. I don't expect to win. In fact, I'll probably be lucky to place in the top half. On the other hand, I love this game, and from what I've learned of the associated community, the majority of players are really cool people. Attending (and getting my butt kicked in Swiss) regionals will give me a chance to play against new opponents, possibly meet some awesome people, and learn a few things to hopefully make me a better player.

I'm fully aware of a lot of the controversies around recent tournaments, and the penchant among some to threaten rage quitting over those issues. I want to say here and now that I love X-wing and enjoy playing it, win or lose. As a direct result, I see regionals and other competitive events first and foremost as opportunities to get in several games and to up my game by playing against some high class, skilled players. If I can make a good list and use it well enough to earn a prize and place in the event, awesome. For now, I'm the big fish in a goldfish bowl, and stand nearly unbeaten (barring statistically unlikely nights of terribly fickle dice), but my opponent pool is rather small and rarely gives as much thought to lists as I do.

Bottom line, though- there will probably always be things in events which will rub people the wrong way, and different perspectives see each and every controversy in a different light. Understanding this, we can treat each other as human beings with respect, whether or not we agree with each other's interpretation of the rules of either the game itself or tournaments.

We all love X-wing, and we love to play it. Instead of grabbing our torches and pitchforks, let's just keep playing. If we don't like how something works, we should address our concerns in a civil manner with either the TO at the event, or assuming that fails, with FFG. Once we've addressed those concerns to the best of our ability, we can jump back in the cockpit, and get back to the dogfights we all love.

With or without issues like Roanoke, I look forward to my first tournament, and if it proves as good an experience as I hope, it will only be the first of many. I just want a great gaming experience and any prizes would be gravy.

May the Force be with us.

I wouldn't say "a lot of the controversies around recent tournaments" as much as "intentional draws at one regional events that has people hurt on the internet"

much less severe

Play games, have fun, let the results be what may.

I intentionally avoided specifically referencing that. I'd rather leave the details to the exhausting threads already going on about them. On the other hand, you're right. "A lot" was a poor choice of words.

You're already approaching it with a great attitude. As long as you view every game (win or lose) as a learning experience, you'll leave satisfied.

Until you accidentally dial a 1-straight instead of 1-bank and fly Boba off the board the following turn...

...satisfied.

>_> <_<

go have fun above all.

I've only been to one so far and it was an interesting experience, one thing I have found while playing this game is there are a lot of fun people to play against and some of them really enjoy talking and being friendly which makes it definitely worth while

which regional are you heading to?

I think that you will find it to be a great experience. On the whole, this community is great to be a part of.
