timing of evade and brace

By Emperor Dane, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

I had a situation come up in a game where I was making an attack at medium range, my opponent had 2 hull remaining, and I had a red crit, he was worried about a structural, so he wanted me to reroll.

the question came up, can he wait until AFTER I reroll to decide to brace? or does he need to decide before seeing the results of my reroll (if I rolled a double, he'd need to brace to stay alive)

I rerolled, got another crit and it WAS a structural, so it didn't end up mattering, but just wanted to clarify.

I couldn't find anything in the reference guide that was clear about this.

Yes.

According to the FAQ, you can await to see the result of your Evade choice on the dice before choosing wether to spend other Tokens.

Very much goes likethis:

Attacker Rolls all ofhis Attack Dice, and does all of his add/spend/modify Mumbo Jumbo.

He spends any ACCs he wants to stop your Defense Tokens...

Then we get to the Defenders Bit :)

You Choose Which Defense Tokens to Spend...

If you Spend an Evade , Reroll or Remove the Die immediately as required.

All you get ot do here is choose what to spend, and to do the Evade... Note that you need to choose now wether you will be Bracing/Redirecting/Containing NOW, but it won't actually do anything until later.

Now the attacker chooses his Critical Effect (if there is still a Crit symbol showing)

Contain Takes effect here, stopping them from choosing the "Default" Critical of "The first Damage card on this attack is Card is Face up." - but it does nothing to stop Assault Concussion Missiles doing 1 damage to each adjacent shield, or Assault Proton Torpedos from doing one immediate face up card, or something similar...

Now you tally up the HIT and CRIT symbols to get the Damage Total. Note that the attacker hasn't spent the critical symbol to do the critical, it was just allowed by it being there... So you count up how many points of damage there are.

Brace Works here, by Halving that Damage Total. It does NOT halve the dice that are on the table, splitting up symbols or anything like that. It just halves the amount of points of damage .

Then, you as the defender take those damage points one point at a time.

Redirect works here, by letting you choose one adjacent shield to take damage on... But you choose how many points that shield takes, as well as the original hull zone - One point at a time.

Yes, he can wait until after the reroll to decide to brace.

I thought I remembered reading some clarification on that rule, I should've checked the FAQ.
