The only problem with the dials to me is the ability to link them with a ship. Adding a window for an ID token is the obvious solutions.

How did you previously match your dials to a ship?

I have no problem with keeping them apart.

Ooooooo, I was just thinking about this too, thanks for posting a photo! I have a 12 vulture droid swarm that is just a pain to keep the dials matched. This is perfect.
