It's time to get back to enjoying... X-wing

By Kdubb, in X-Wing

Great atmosphere. Pre-painted minis. Theme.

Squad building is not as heavy as deck building (compared to card games.)

edit: Pretty easy to learn with sensible rules.

Every time I game, I tell a story. I like the stories.

I love I'm no longer the crazy guy yelling at people to fly defenders.

This post is simple. And I would appreciate it if everyone who even takes a peek at this thread, for the sake of the community, takes the opportunity to reply. It doesn't have to be long, or funny, or clever, it just has to be positive and remind us of what really brought us altogether. So the question is simply this-

What do you love most about this game?

It's right there on the front of the box:

STAR WARS

It's not about card combos, or "builds" or tournaments. It's about getting Luke and the rest of Red Squadron up there fighting it out against a horde of TIE Fighters, or Han and Chewie dodging Xisor's goons in an asteroid field - or about Darth Vader restoring order to the Galaxy by personally blowing up a load of pirates, saboteurs and criminals in stolen ships. :)

Dum dum dum DUM-de-dum!

I fly X-Wings with proton torpedoes (and R2 always rides with Luke - anything else is wrong. Heck, I even looked up the other astromech cards on Wookieepedia to find out who they belonged to!), TIE Defenders without the upgrade cards from Imperial Veterans, and I even bought two of the Imperial Aces box so I could fly two Imperial Guard or Sabre Squadron Interceptors. :)

I like the moments when the rules tie in with the setting - like Luke, Biggs, Porkins and Poe's abilities (and plenty others, I'm sure), or like how the weapon and equipment cards on the Corvette in the campaign included in the box perfectly replicate how they behaved in the computer games.

Right, while others get upset over tournament rules, I'm going to run around the living room with an X-Wing making "neeeow! pew pew pew!" noises. :D

Good question! I've got a few levels of answers, really.

On a primal level, I really enjoy outflying my opponent. It's not so much arc dodging, but it's picking that one move that just messes up my opponent's whole turn. It's usually something simple that puts him/her in a tight spot.

On a higher level, I love taking a crazy or non-standard list and beating all the dang netlists out there. Using something that is supposed to be not good or not competitive and winning with it. I get a joy out of that.

On the highest level, though, I just love when it's a big Star Wars-ian event. A bunch of generic ships flying a mission to blow something up and others trying to stop them. Seeing a wing of X-wings moving across the table and clusters of Tie Fighters moving to intercept is just awesome. That to me is the height of the game. Forget the 100 pt death match.

Brewing lists is my favorite thing. When they actually work out is just icing on the cake.

Also, flying a millimeter away from an obstacle after a daring maneuver is so rewarding.

I really enjoy the game in its entirety: painted ships, squad building, strategy in-game, etc. However, what I love the most are all of the awesome people I've met and friendships I've made. A big reason this game is fun, for me, is because the people are fun to play with and compete against. I've had so many great experiences and so few negatives. Thanks Kdubb for starting a positive thread.

I know I keep posting in here, but there are a lot of things I love about this game.

This one, in particular is about those little singular moments. That perfect block, that unbelievably daring move that you knew was either going to be pure brilliance or pure doom turns out WAY better than expected. When you manage to kill someone's ace with a Dead Man's Switch.

Also the fact that it's just as much fun when those moments are when things go completely pear shaped too.

I love STAR WARS :D The force, the not-everything-is-shiny-and-super-tech universe, the characters, the fun, the lightsabers, and of course the fantastic spaceships ;)

And X-wing, well I love the prepainted-high-quality-high-detail-miniatures and the gameplay!!!

Recreating in miniature the joyful hours that I spent playing the Lucasarts flight sims as a twenty-something.

I don't much care about finding efficient synergies between pilots and upgrades, and would never be terribly interested in tournament play. For me, 'vanilla' X-Wing hits the sweet spot: half a dozen Academy Tie Fighter jocks versus a handful of Red Squadron X-Wings and one unique X-Wing ace does the business. I look forward to FFG one day developing the mission side of the game, and in the meantime I will mine the Mission Control webpage and do my best to develop my own missions based on the Lucasarts video games ones.

You know, I am happy to abandon the tournament version of the game. Even just logging in to see these threads about Regionals and collusion and draws....I just don't care! I don't even have to open up the thread.

Liking casual play and looking forward to delving into it.

Hmmm....I wonder if there is a way to go through some of the old X-wing and Tie Fighter video games and pull missions out from them?

You can google the mission scripts on the net. I did that as a source of insiration for writing my own non-linear campaign, too...! :)

Last week we did a team epic game, was a blast.

I played a fluffy list, based on Phoenix squadron from Rebels, although my A-Wings performed much, much better than the ones in the show.

It was a full squadron of 12 Tie Fighters and a Gonz with bombers, vs my Ghost/Phantom, GR-75 and 3 A-Wings a VCX-100, Falcon and Attack Shuttle, and some X-Wings.

The Falcon, X-Wings and Ghost the store owner was flying went down fairly quickly from massed fire. I brought my Ghost in from the side and managed to stay on the flanks of the Ties for the most part. Even got to use the autoblaster turret thanks to Zeb.

Was kinda a odd list for me. I had nearly 20 upgrades between the 6 ships on the table. But everyone had a fun time.

Now, what would be even cooler is if someone else did it for me! :D

Anyone? Bueller...?

Ballsy maneuvering around rocks/board edge/etc. Even if I lose the match it's that one turn where I felt like a boss behind the dials that keeps me coming back.

Pulled a 4k off that landed me right in docking position behind a YV666 with a Y wing last weekend. Moments like that were you have no idea if you will crash and managed to pull it off are awesome.

Flying Tie Fighters against the Meta is always fun, and it feels great when you win.

What I love most about this game would have to be the times where you're near the end of a game and it's just 2 ships left, 1 per person, dodging and attacking/defending. Had several games where that can last a log time and it's super intense and awesome.

It brought me back into miniature gaming. So simple to understand, yet so many options, plus pre painted minis (hurray)

And it's star wars!

What's not to like?
