Sith and Mandalorian Overlap

By ReallyoldGM, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The Sith Wars, especially the second one, and the Mandolorian Crusade seem to overlap. There are worlds that appear to have been conquered by both inside of a few decades. The information available on the subject (Guide to Warfare, Atlas, Wookieepedia) is so full of canon detail its hard to pick out the general flow of events. Anyone have a simple run down of the conflicts?

Have you seen the Star Wars Timeline Gold site? There is so much more timeline stuff there than you could ever possibly want to know.

Anyway, if you’re brave enough, take a look at http://www.starwarsfanworks.com/timeline/

That is indeed.... impressive but way overkill, which is my issue already. I don't really need to know that some Jedi by some name went in with his Padawan on a given day to rescue this diplomat or whatever. Im looking more for a general timeline, just a "Sith moved into this region during this period, conquered these worlds, held in check by this date" sort of thing.

If I can remember:

  • Great Hyperspace War (Naga Sadow and the Old Sith Empire vs the Jedi and the Republic)
  • several century break
  • Beast Wars of Onderon (indirectly sparked by Dark Lord of the Sith Freedon Nadd, and lasts a few centuries)
  • The wars against the Krath (herein the Mandalorians are allied to Ulic Qel-Droma)
  • The defeat of Exar Kun and eventual death of Qel-Droma
  • A break of several decades
  • The Mandalorian Wars begin (with Mandalore the Ultimate being a pawn of the Sith Emperor/Valkorion) in the Outer Rim
  • The events of the Knights of the Old Republic comic series
  • The Mandalorians attack the Republic, Reven and his followers join the battle, defeat the Mandalorians at the Battle of Malachor
  • The Jedi Civil War begins, then Darth Revan is usurped by Darth Malak
  • The end of the Jedi Civil War (the events of Knights of the Old Republic video game)
  • Revan disappears, his companion Canderous Ordo becomes Mandalore the Preserver, and attempts to reunite the Mandalorian clans on Dxun, moon of Onderon
  • The First Jedi Purge and the Dark Wars
  • The Jedi Exile, with the help of Mandalore the Preserver, ends the Dark Wars, and the Old Sith Wars come to an end
  • Then a few centuries, and Vitiate's Sith Empire attacks the Republic, sparking the Great Galactic War. I'm less certain about the details here, but the Mandalorians get involved with the Sith again (under the leadership of Mandalore the Lesser and later Mandalore the Vindicated)

It's, at best, a highly abridged sequence of events.

IIRC, the Madalorians were the partners (pawns?) of the Sith Empire. The Mandalorians moved openly against the Republic and when they started to lose, the Sith jumped in. This is, of course, a massive simplification of the events.

Thanks, yes... that's kind of the drift I was getting. The Mandalorians appeared to be on the side of the Sith several times, sometimes operating as pawns, sometimes independently but seemingly always in their clutches. A simple time line like that posted above is very helpful.

Well...kind of. They definitely got co-opted at several (especially earlier) points by some of the more charismatic Sith leaders (like Qel-Droma). But they also got usurped by some former Jedi (Dorjander Kace). But even when they were being "puppeteered", they were still serving the general Mandalorian cause of nomadic conquest, so they still tended to get what they wanted.

A lot of the canonical tales of the Mandalorians during the Sith wars and later the Mandalorian Crusades also feature highly idiosyncratic leaders like Cassus Fett, who was unusual in many respects. It's hard to generalize Mandalorian politics and intentions around these times because of figures like him.
