My Experience at CAC... Random Acts of Kindness

By testobviouslyfalse, in X-Wing

Yesterday I participated in the Campaign Against Cancer (CAC) event in South Bend, Indiana. I wanted to share with you my experience. There are two things that you should take from this post, giving is good, and everyone that is interested in competitive Xwing should make it a priority to go to a Campaign Against Cancer event next year.

The tournament is a charity event that supports the Relay for Life, the largest cancer support in the country (hopefully I heard that right from the rep). The CAC format is decidedly unique, players are divided into 8 man pods, where they compete in a 3 game tournament. At the conclusion of the pod, players are then distributed into pods based on their record (3-0 players go into pod 1, 2-1 players into pod 2, etc). All the players in pod 1 get a prize, and the winners of each other pod get their own prize as well. Throughout the day there are raffles (tickets are included in the registration) where more prizes can be won. But I had a surprise of my own for all my opponents today.

For this event I painted 6 ships and made the decision to do a random acts of kindness for each of my opponents. I painted 3 T-70 X-Wings in the Poe Style, 2 Phantoms, 1 decloaking and 1 as an FO. Finally I painted a Kath Scarlet. At the conclusion of the match (I didn’t want my opponents to go easy on me because I got them a ship!) I would give them a ship and tell them to do their best to get more people to CAC for the next year. See the pictures here: https://imgur.com/a/np4Xz

Onto the tournament:
I flew
Dash Rendar- PTL, EU, HLC, Outrider, Kanan (58)

Prototype A-Wing – Refit (15)

Gold Y-Wing – R3A2, BTL-A, TLT (26)

Game 1 – Tyler

Kallus Whisper, Yorr Palpshuttle, Omega Leader

This game was super fun, Tyler was a great opponent who flew his whisper well. For the first 35 minutes we didn’t take a single ship off the board! Omega Leader and Whisper harassed Dash enough that finally Dash went down. The stressbot and the Awing did work in the endgame and killed omega leader and took down half of the shuttle before we went to time.

Loss 58-42… But that’s not important. At the end of the game I gave him a Poe Xwing, although he didn’t say in so few words, I think he was more surprised by this than anything.

Game 2 – Chris

Patrol Decimator with Palp, Inquisitor, and Sienar Test Pilot (TAP)

A great game, he rightly focused down the stressbot early, while I focused on the decimator, I got greedy with dash and switched targets while the decimator had one hull left, he range 1’d my awing and took 4 hull off it. Dash did work endgame and I pulled it out.

Win 100-41… but that’s not important. I learned that he really likes his imperial ships so I gifted him a cloaking whisper. What was cool about this is that later in the day we had a great talk! He showed me pictures of his collection in his house and I found another gaming group that I might have the opportunity of playing with someday. Totally worth it.

Game 3- James

Palp Shuttle, Inquisitor, and Whisper

This was probably my favorite memory of the day. The game itself was mildly interesting, I played to my strengths. The stresshog got the inquisitor. Whisper accidentally flew onto a rock and then got blocked by an awing, and then the shuttle got taken down. But James is ENTHUSIASTIC, we were laughing and having a great time. There are certain moments in xwing where you forget that you are in a competitive environment and you are just having fun with a buddy that you just met. This was one of those times.

Win 100-0… But that’s not important. He had an unpainted whisper so I summarily pulled out the first order phantom and gifted it to him. In return he pulled his whisper off the table and replaced it with mine! So cool. He told me that his son had lost his Advanced Cloaking Device card and that he could now give the one he borrowed for this tournament back.

So now we got redistributed into different PODS and I got placed into the 2nd Tier! Freaking awesome for me, considering I am really a middle of the road player.

Game 4- Travis

Kavil TLT and prox mines

2 Syndicated thugs with TLT and prox mines

Another phenomenal game with a super fun opponent. Our initial engagement proved to be the most critical. Dash hit kavil with everything, so did the stressbot, and the little Awing that could got 3 hits on kavil (unmodified mind you) to seal the deal. After that the ywings worked dash down to half while they got burned down.

Win 100-29… But that’s not important. As he said he plays mostly scum, I decided to gift him with a Kath repaint. Clearly he was happy, we had a great conversation that I wont share on a forum like this, but suffice to say, the gift went over well.

Game 5- Mike

Kallus Whisper, Yorr PalpShuttle, Omega Leader

A game of unbalanced dice. My Awing died from a single whisper attack, the stressbot and dash took down the shuttle and then Omega leader. Whisper killed stressbot. We then had a 20 minute duel between Dash and whisper. We concluded the game with whisper and dash facing each other about 5 squares away, whisper has no shields, dash has two. Whisper decloaks forward and dash does a 4 straight and barely gets passed. Whisper does a 3k (he was looking for the block then to get behind me) takes 2 shields from dash, then dash with a tl and focus kills whisper. Potentially the most stressful event of the day.

Win 100-71.. but that doesn’t matter. I gave him a painted poe and he says, “This is the nicest thing anyone has done for me in this game” I mean, what do you say to that? Either way, since we played the game and had some post game meaningful interaction, I totally made a new friend.

Game 6- Chris (a different one)

Palpshuttle, Omega Leader, Inquisitor, Carnor Jax

I actually drove up with this guy so my random acts of kindness wasn’t going to be a surprise. We played our game, Carnor got unlucky and the little Awing that could blew him away. Wampa died, the shuttle died and omega leader was all alone. He got the stressbot, but it took dash and the awing 20 minutes to kill omega leader?!!! Geez.

Win 100-56… And this matters a little, because I won my POD and beat a really good opponent (that I have never beaten) He got a Poe, which is good because he was talking about me doing one for him anyway, saves me a little time in the future.

Conclusion

I won my pod! I have never done this well at xwing before, amazing day… but you know what? Reflecting on it, I don’t actually think it matters. I truly made some people happy today and made some new friends.

If you want to know more about CAC go onto http://x-wing.org If you want to donate you can find twin suns charities (get it?) at their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/twinsunscharitiesinc . As a side note I am in no way affiliated with organizing CAC or twin suns charities, I just think it is a great event that everyone should attend.

Pretty cool -- and very gentlemanly of you to share your random acts of kindness.

Sounds like a fun event! Hmm ... South Bend isn't that far ...

Wow, awesome report! This is the best post that I've seen on this forum in a long time.

You sir, have set the bar high for random acts of kindness. I applaud you for that.

I truly enjoyed this post and hope it has the impact you want it to. I'm glad to know not every tournament player out there is a complete d-bag. I know so many people who horde all the baubles and bits and ships and things that is X-Wing, and it is truly refreshing to see someone 'let it go', and end up even happier for it.

Kudos. :)

That's one great initiative you had! I believe you you deserve the Interwebs Seal of Approval!

thank you for sharing your story and encouraging people to donate.

it is because I care about charity a lot that I want to raise awareness of one significant problem there was with this campaign, its organizer and the charity chosen, that I hope can be fixed next time, but I doubt it will unless people are aware of it, but I don't want to hijack your thread so I will post a new thread.

Wow, this community will complain about anything. and if you didnt want to hijack the thread you shouldn't have posted at all, just made a new thread.

Well done sir. Very well done.

Thumbs up !!!

In my opinion our beloved leaders should invest more money on this subject, as they do not...it is our duty. Good job, and put your wallets at the ready.

That is awesome. I hope I get to play you sometime. :D

I'm In Fort Wayne, IN area, or we could always play on Vassal. Not gonna promise you a ship but if you try just a little you can probably get a win out of me.
