Mono tactics

By DurinVoronwe, in Strategy and deck-building

Due to the lack of news, I decided to work with a mono tactics deck without Hama or Boromir, due to the challenge of mustering willpower without Hama or quest for a lot and then combat without Boromir (with him I can quest with all heroes and let him do all the combat alone). The willpower of mono tactics is of course a problem, but my biggest threat is the lack of cancellation (both shadows and when revealed). Honor guard could help a little, but more is really needed. Some other big weaknesses of the deck is card draw and location control. Legolas and Gandalf is the only card draw available, and the wizard is also needed for card draw. For locations I have Arod. I am now in need of help to improve the deck, as I am no Seastan at deckbuilding. Here is the final deck:

Strategy:

Théoden and Mablung are used for questing, alongside Guthalf, Mithlond Sea-Watcher, Envoy of Perargir, Dunedain Hunter, Derndingle Warrior when I not need him for defense and other willpower allies who isn´t needed for combat.

Gimli is doing whatever he needs to do. Defending in early game (and getting damage), attacking for 4-6 mid game and questing (sometimes with grappeling hook) when the allies cover all of the combat.

Mablung generates resources and Legolas covers card draw. I think I need to add more of the latter, but I do not know how. Maybe a third copy of Legolas and I´m risking dead copies in my hand.

For quest pushes or big rounds of combat, play down a Gandalf or Saruman. Gandalf´s ability is often used for threat reduction, but sometimes for the cards.

I have only tested it twice against a Journey along (or down) the Anduin, and won both games. The second was a good test, due to a first turn second hill troll and a starting threat over 30, but it could not stop Gimli. The heroes, a few Hunters and Sea watchers and Gandalf defeated them both thanks to the dwarf and a thicket of spears.

As I said, I am no Seastan, so help me improve the deck!

How does this deck do with questing? I've been meaning to experiment with mono-tactics myself--between Theoden, Grappling Hook, and Trained for War, I'm wondering if we have enough questing support to make it viable now.

How important do you think Mablung is for this deck's functioning? Would Merry be a good lower-threat alternative?

The deck struggles a little with questing, but it´s way better than it was back in the ring.maker cycle, when I tried building it before. Théoden is awesome, but the key to is to spam allies to fight. Then you can commit two or three heroes and some allies to the quest, or when you need to push you can use trained for war. Grappling hook is great with Gimli, and can often add three "willpower" to the quest. So yes, it exists enough questing support for tactics to make it viable.

Mablung is good for the deck, generating 1-2 resources per turn, but Merry seems to be a solid replacement. I do not own him myself, and that is why I haven´t tested it out. You will lose the hit points too, which is bad with the limited healing, but the threat will compensate for that. Test it out if you want!

I love Mablung! Woot.
