MOV proposal to end 0 score draws.

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

At first I thought it was impossible for players to get draws unless for the occasional mirror match. However I guess there was a tournament where the entire top cut of the list decided to not score any points in getting an entire round of draws. So to help break up the 0 score matches how about changing the MOV like this.

In the event that there was no scores (no ships destroyed or large ships reduced to 1/2 hitpoints) the mov will count the points of the entire squadron for determining the winner, If the squadron point value of both lists are not equal then a modified win will go to the player with the highest points. So example Player A brings a 99 point list and Player B brings a 100 point list. No scores are taken then Player A will score a loss with a 99 point MOV and Player B will score a modified win with a 100 point MOV.

So basically this just makes it harder to get pacifist draws if other top players are underbidding for initiative.

Any thoughts?

I think you'd be better off just giving the win to whoever has initiative (or to the second player. Either or).

However, this would have zero effect on today's tournament because it is legal to declare a draw at the beginning of the game if both players agree. This is not about two players flying around and not shooting. The game simply never takes place. You would have to remove both intentional draws and regular draws at the same time.

No.

That ID so many of you seem to be up in arms about it essentially a double concession. Both sides "destroy" the other side for 100 points at the same time; game over in a tie with both players get 100 points.

Why? Flying around not shooting at one another is a clear case of collusion (whether ID draws exist or not).

You came up with a solution, in want of an actual problem for it "fix". Irrespective of the ID debacle, I have seen all of 1 true draw resulting from no one dying in 3 years of play (and the game was actually played to win by both players, it just never happened that a ship actually died).

This is not a problem that needs fixing, and tying it to initiative is unworkable if you meant for it to include intentional draws.

No. Collusion aside, the issue with the ID is the victory points allocated, not the MoV (which is only used for tiebreaking).

But doesn't that encourage the player with initiative to drag the game out for the hope of a draw? I would think something like rolling a dice after time is out for the win and on a tied roll, the initiative wins, would be better?

It does, but it incentivizes the player without initiative to be aggressive.

I'd much rather lose because I got outflown -- even of my opponent was trying to escape and get a draw -- than have a random die roll after the game determine the winner.

I'm still learning the game, used to people getting draws in MTG by just playing very slowly. Is it harder to do this in Xwing? Are there max times per turn or is it just a matter of complaining to the judge if you think someone is intentionally stalling?

Slow play is possible; if you think your opponent is intentionally slow playing to drag out the game I recommend calling over a TO or judge. Individual turns aren't timed so it is a judgment call.
