"Yes, it is not good thing to do what I did, but the rules allow it so it's completely legal"

- Banker/ Accountant

- Defence Lawyer

- X wing tournament player.

The difference is two of those three things have serious consequences for those affected. Comparing a game, where actions allowed are defined by rules, to real life circumstances that impact people's lives and livelihoods is a silly way to make an argument.

Can I just say I'm mildly pleased it happened in a place called Roanoke, rather than, say Milwaukee or something?

Roanoke just has more of a conspiracy sound to it. Roanoke Incident sounds more exciting. :P

It's not the first incident in Roanoke either.

CROATOAN.

I saw an episode of the X files on Roanoke in the 90's.

Coincidence? Both our game and that show start with an X.

Definately a conspiracy!

I guess that means that tin foil hats will be popular at tourneys now.

"FLY CASUAL!" Screamed the Internet Man,

"FLY CASUAL OR DIE!"

"FLY CASUAL LIKE ME!"

"BE A GOOD PERSON LIKE ME!",

he posted, to anyone who was reading

"YOU'RE COLLUDING! YOU'RE A DISGRACE!"

"YOU SHOULD BE BANNED FROM THE GAME

FOREVER!"

"YOU'RE A CHEAT! YOU'RE A TRYHARD!"

"YOU RUIN THE GAME FOR PEOPLE

WHO JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN!"

And again, he typed,

with no sense of irony,

"FLY CASUAL! DO AS I SAY!"

"OR YOU'RE SCUM AND A CHEAT AND A BASTARD!"

OH, You're that *******... not surprised

But he has a quite strong point. I must admit, well trolled, well trolled and such a long term troll even with heaver flipping out over the exact same reaction he had on a perfectly valid strategy.

One day I might be in a position to make a living from playing games with little plastic spaceships. I'll be able to pay my mortgage, buy a new car and save enough money to go on exotic holidays.

I'll also be able to go on the internet and call people names, make accusations and act like a complete ass.

Unfortunately, the day that I can make a living from little toy spaceships doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon. Ach well, it looks like X-Wing isn't going to cause me to have to reevaluate my life anytime soon.

Cheers

You are not helping your point with creating fantasy people to ridicule. It might make you feel better when you are better person than your imagined friends, but it really those not help the current discussion.

Just because the consequences of something is smaller doesn't change it from morally wrong to morally right.

I really dislike the ID rule, anything that makes not playing the game a better choice than playing the game is a bad rule.

Said no one ever.

Are you kidding? It's been said a lot around here. I doubt we go more then a month or two where someone doesn't effectively say just that.

That if you don't fly by their unwritten rules, and according to what they consider to be the spirit of the game, you're a bad person if not worse.

Then you missed my point

Just because the consequences of something is smaller doesn't change it from morally wrong to morally right.

It is however nigh impossible to establish an objective moral framework for anything, much less a plastic spaceship game.

Besides morality has little bearing in this topic and getting caught up in it only detracts from the question of whether ID have a place in Xwing or not.

I moved with my Alphas at PS 1.

He moved his PS 2 Palpshuttle.

Then he moved all of his PS 4 ships at the same time.

Then Omega Leader.

Forgot if he went on to move Omega Leader and then tried to put focuses down on his 3 PS 4's thereby missing his opportunities for actions with all of his PS 4 ships, or if he went to focus with all his PS 4's before moving Omega Leader and only skipping 2 actions.

Either way, wasted a free Crack Squadron/Wampa, and since he had no focuses he didn't kill an Interceptor. He rolled plenty of focus results, haha.

Everything was moved in proper PS order, he just skipped a bunch of action opportunities and I used it to get an easy win.

Out of curiosity, is this the "MajorJuggler incident" (if I may jump on the bandwagon of coming up with catchy names for these things) that was discussed so much after the recent Nova Squadron podcast? The one where the TO ultimately ruled in such a way that ships didn't move?

Cool, so you're saying if I look through this thread, I won't find anyone literally calling for the Roanoke top 8 to be banned, for being a disappointment to the game, for ruining fly casual etc? Cos we both know your petulant yelling of 'strawman' isn't going to hold up when you're typing that in the same thread as people comparing Paul Heaver to Lance Armstrong's doping scandal.

his strategy wasnt valid, by consenting to an action (verbally or not) and then objecting ONLY when the action became advantageous in the game is a ****** move. We all know Para acts like a child on the forums, now we know he's a **** in real life too

No. But Paragoomba championed that situation.

I am saying that the caricature you created with your post does not exit. There are without a doubt upset people, but they are not the retards you make them with your post. Exaggeration is a fine rhetoric tool to make even reasonable people look like lunatics.

And look, I am not comparing you to terrorist from ISIS, but that is the exact kind of thing murderers from all over the world use to justify their moral superiority and right to kill innocent people.

(Yes, I like hyperbole maybe even more than you do, we just have to accept that they are not constructive, just fun and effective.)

Except they do.

The reaction to the 9 individuals involved (including the TO because, hell I can if I want..) Has been ludicrous. As much as I dislike the rule and interpretation of it that seems to have been accepted they aren't the ones that made it. They just played to it.

ID being worth 0pts sounds good to me. Still allows for those who have already cemented their place to take a breath but importantly doesn't take away anyone's shot at making the cut with their final result.

Interesting to see other suggestions for revamping Xwings OP format. I dont have enough experience in competitive gaming to get into it but a group into elimination as we have in Footballs (soccer) World Cup and Champions League sounds good to me, I have to admit to being a little unsatisfied with Swiss when I first started the game. For bigger events you could even go group into group into elimination.

Seedings could be an issue for sure but not insurnountable and no worst than the randomness of the first pairing in swiss. Also you'd still have to clear up the drawn game side of things.. Ditching them or making them 0pts still works i reckon.. but an issue in any one group is at least isolated from the event as a whole.

his strategy wasnt valid, by consenting to an action (verbally or not) and then objecting ONLY when the action became advantageous in the game is a ****** move.

What he did is legal, and completely allowed. A lot of us have 3 strike policies, where we'll let something slide 3 times and after that you're not going to get any more chances to fix a mistake.

The rules are quite clear yet many people really don't get them. It is completely and totally at the discretion of the other player if someone can fix a missed opportunity or not. There is no rule that states once you allow it, you must keep allowing it.

Whether it's good sportsmanship or not doesn't change the rules, and also doesn't change if the strategy is valid or not.

Being a **** is a successful strategy to win any competition which does not have further social interactions with the people you are screwing. It might be a bad strategy on forums when people will crucify you for it, but it is for sure a valid way to win a tourney. You do not have to like it, but you should at least acknowledge that it does indeed works just fine.

soo...how has this thread not been locked yet?

I am saying that the caricature you created with your post does not exit.

As Sithborg pointed out... Yes they do, we've seen them here more than once.

He's no longer around here, but we actually had someone say they'd commit physical assault if their concept of 'fly casual' and the spirit of the game was violated.

I agree it's a shady move if done I tentionally. But that's my morality speaking. I try to avoid imposing tat on others.

I normally word my allowance of taking a missed opportunity "sure take it, this time" or to that effect. Largely as I won't allow constant lax play to go unpunished but I'm more comfortable giving that verbal heads up to my opponent rather than hoping they keep doing it so I can poince at the opportune time.

My morals are mine, I won't be to other peoples, nor should they have to, to mine. Plenty of people in some areas of my life think I am or can be a d!#% but that's fine by me as I quite like who I am and am not worried about if I'm am or am not the most moral person in the room.

I almost want to try to find the thread about Gencon from 2 years ago. I mean, the militant casual response to those that disagreed with the allowing of the cloak token was pretty bad, if I remember.
