2016 Regionals Results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

The top 8 cut of the Vancouver, BC regional is starting soon. I didn't make the cut and I'm back in the States so unfortunately I can't keep you posted.

How many players?
We had 70 players in swiss.

We are heading into the top 2 after a short break. It is going to be Patryk (bmf) and Travis in the final. Dengaroo vs. Palp Aces.

Edit - a few pics of the event - https://imgur.com/a/W6PHC

Awesome venue, our second year here. There is a bar too, in case your day didn't go too well on the tables, just like mine.

Are there any streams or recordings of this tournament?

Unfortunately not

No recording, unfortunately.

Patryk takes the trophy in the end. I for one welcome our new Dengaroo overlords

Congratulations, you bad mother ******! ;)

*edit* Wow, apparently the swear filter doesn't catch that variant of the f-word, so I did it myself.

Here's a few images from Vancouver B.C. thought some people would like to see.

Guy named Ben Gaetke had the balls to put this K-Turn on me in top 8 https://scontent.fsnc1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/13697025_1062896007131509_8196886686364192897_n.jpg?oh=2d79ebc74958f63a6e6c1945011112cf&oe=57EA8E55 .

Looks like I ended up proving Blair correct. :)

It was a really fun event, same great venue as last year. It was great to meet so many friendly xwingers in person and to see old friends.

Here is a quick recap of my road to the finals (I lost my notes from the Swiss rounds so this is from memory):

Swiss:

Rd1 - Bye

Rd2 - Mirror match! Opponent had Unhinged instead of R5P8 on Manaroo. Win 100-20

Rd3 - Kanan, Biggs, Ezra. Loss 100-52.

Rd4 - Inquisitor, Fel and Palp Shuttle. Win 82-41

Rd5 - VI Palp Chirneau, Adaptability Prockets Vader. Win 100-28

Rd6 - PTL X7 Ryad, Inq, Baffle Palp Shuttle. Win 100-0

Elimination:

Top 8 - Nicholas Smith - Dengar (Predator, K4 Security Droid, R4B11, Glitterstim, Punishing One, Engine Upgrade); Trandoshan Slaver (Gunner, Bossk, Zuckuss, Inertial Dampeners). Win 100-28

Top 4 - Calen Wong - Kanan Jarrus (Ghost, Twin Laser Turret, Tactician, Rec Spec, Advanced Sensors, Tactical Jammer); Ezra Bridget (Phantom, Rage, Chopper, Guidance Chips); Biggs Darklighter (R4D6, Integrated Astromech). Win 73-57

Final - Travis Woolridge - Whisper (Vet Instincts, FCS, Intel Agent, Advanced Cloaking); Inqusitor (Push the Limit, Autothrusters, TIE/V1); Omicron Group Pilot (Emperor Palpatine). Win 100-0

Feels good to defend my title. The guys from Alberta and Washington put up a very hard fight!

Awesome guys, keep the updates coming. I'm delayed on getting everything pulled into the first page but it'll be updated shortly.

I have some really nice charts of the squad archetype meta data that I'll be publishing once I get all the info finally updated. Spoiler alert: Dengaroo has been performing very well after the cut.

Cheers Wet Coast GT!

I ran Whisper, Echo and an Epsilon Squad blocker. Place 44th or 45th out of 70. Not too shabby for my first big event ever. Everyone I played was a total boss on the table and real great people. I had so much fun and learned a lot, both about my list and about X-Wing. I also learned that in reality the bad experiences in high level X-Wing are very few and far between and so heavily eclipsed by the positive ones that they hardly seem to matter at all.

To my opponents, you were all amazing to play against and I hope I was even half as gracious as you were this weekend!

Cheers and good luck!

PS: Whisper and Echo say see you next year... ;)

4 - Calen Wong - Kanan Jarrus (Ghost, Twin Laser Turret, Tactician, Rec Spec, Advanced Sensors, Tactical Jammer); Ezra Bridget (Phantom, Rage, Chopper, Guidance Chips); Biggs Darklighter (R4D6, Integrated Astromech)

Maybe I should start running Guidance Chips and Bomb Loadouts on my autoblaster Y's.

Wanted to give a shout out and thank our TO and his crew for making the 2016 Vancouver, BC X-wing Regionals event as awesome as it was!

It was a joy to reunite with friends, meet new players, fly my Y-wings, and witness how much our player base has grown across all corners of the Pacific Northwest.

Congratulations to Patryk on his 2nd year victory, and congratulations to Calen on knocking me out at Top 8 - well played, friend! ;)

It's time to start considering bringing lists which are hard counters to Dengaroo at high level tourneys if you are a top level player. What exactly that is though...

But then Manaroo will just run from Wes and probably succeed in doing so.

Wes, Corran, and Biggs

That should work. If you can stress out Manaroo and steal his tokens, that should quiet down Mr. Dengar quite a bit.

But then Manaroo will just run from Wes and probably succeed in doing so.

If it's the OCR4 variant of Dengar, Wes can just steal his infinite focus token. Though initiative matters here, because if Dengaroo has initiative (and they usually will) Dengar will get to retaliate on Wes before he steals the token, so he'll still get use out of it before ot's stolen.

Also, Dengar often has Glitterstim, which is an infinite focus that can't be stolen.

you need VI Wes so you're sitting at 10. It's cheaper and guaranteed, as opposed to the points needed to secure a shaky bid

if Dengar pops stims (has to do so before Wes shoots), slap off his lock instead so he can't torp your buddies. Once stims are gone, obviously he can't do **** about you anymore

even if Dengar retaliates, he's not killing Wes since Biggs will prevent double-tapping by soaking Dengar's actual attack (as opposed to the attack gained via Dengar's ability)

The reign of Scum has begun! All hail the bounty hunters! Do dastardly deeds!

Palpatine, the old king, is dead. Long live king Dengar!

So refreshing that 5 of top 8 are not Imperial aces with or without Palpatine. The meta will adjust and Dengaroo will eventually get pushback. Thankfully these results also mean trashing U-boats is not allowed anymore.

Nono

It's "emperor palpatine is dead, long live king payback!"

Of course Wes is VI, but it doesn't matter. Step 8 on the timing flow chart has players resolve one "after attacking or defending" ability in order of initiative. So Wes shoots, Dengar retaliates, Wes strips the focus.

Corran, Wes, Biggs is certainly a viable counter but it's still a tough fight. Wes could very well die to 2 fully modified retaliations, and then the all you can eat focus buffet is back on the menu.

We'll see with Gencon coming up. Good players are aware of this list and are practicing against it and have been (as the players at the above regional likely were as well), and it looks like they're either getting beat by it or choosing to fly it. I'm not going to be surprised if this list leads to the worst narrowing of the meta we've seen and that's saying something when compared with the Phantom/Fat Han days when there were a lot fewer cards.
