Massachusetts Regionals has 88 pre-registered so far, for this Saturday. I have a wedding to go to so I won't be able to attend. Maybe I'll go to Pittsburgh again this year...

Awesome! I was really hoping for a Top 16 cut. Not that i'll make it that far...

Palp Aces is generally better than triple Aces because having 2 unkillable aces is better than having 3 killable ones. If you have 3 regular aces I can just pick one and kill it. If you go all in against a Palp boosted ace, good chance you're doing nothing.

Also, it's not like the shuttle doesn't contribute. If they go for the aces first, that shuttle is firing off a range 1 shot on something, maybe with a modifier and palpatine. 10 health behind 1 agility and potentially Palpatine is something that you can force to last a few turns unless you face an alpha strike list.

The Palp Shuttle is almost a mini-ace itself, good chance it'll be ignored and its awful mobility won't be relevant.

Gordon here. I ran the scorekeeping, made the announcements, and calculated the cut.

Yes, we advertised this everywhere as having a top-16 cut. Frankly, we simply didn't imagine getting fewer than 77 players. Didn't enter our minds.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, we had 82 registrants, 12 of which did not show. 70 players were in the event. We collected 10 bye cards, which means that we had 75 effective players for the purpose of calculating the number of rounds and the cut per the FFG tournament rules. This meant we had 6 Swiss rounds followed by a cut to top-8. This was part of the opening announcements, and was specifically confirmed prior to the start of round 1 - the crowd responding with groans of disappointment.

Frankly, I suspect no one was more disappointed than I. I wanted those 12 people to play. They didn't.

I even went over, in depth, the FFG tournament rules with a player in the middle of the event in an attempt to find a loophole where we could count those missing players for the purposes of round calculation. However, a "player" is defined as someone in the event who has an X-Wing squad and submitted a squad list. Therefore, we had 70 players, +5 for byes, and that means a top-8 cut per the FFG tournament rules.

Thanks,

$30 price tag scared me away. Could that have been a factor to not selling out?

I was kind of hoping for a smaller cut, only because if, by some god-awful luck, I manage to make it, I wanted Sunday to be a shorter day.

'Course, I don't really expect that to be an issue, as I panicked last night and submitted a list I've yet to practice. I wasn't happy with any of my test games with my other, more played lists, and I haven't had as much time as normal to play, so...

Aw, crap, what have I done? >.<

We did not sell out, which surprised us. In 2015, one of the real problems we identified was selling out, then people calling to cancel, then needing to maintain a callback list of who we should contact to tell them there was an open spot, then waiting... it was madness on my staff, and really detracted from our ability to actually focus on setting up for the event. That was one big area of operational improvement we identified, and that is what led to the no-cancellations policy. It isn't because we don't want people to attend, or because we wanted to keep your money, but because the time and attention required to manage it was too much of a distraction from actually putting on a great event. Moreover, this seems to be the norm for other big events (though certainly not all), so I didn't feel we were really out of bounds. And we were super-clear up front. This is and remains a tough area to strike a balance, and any solution is going to be wrong in some situations. We'll just keep monitoring and finding opportunities to improve it when we can.

Wow I would be highly upset if I cancelled in a reasonable about of time and didn't get a refund especially if it was 30 dollars. Doesn't matter if it's maddening on your staff it's business which is hard sometimes. I'm sure someone who didn't get a refund would probably never go to another of your regionals.

From what I've heard, the winner of the Colorado Regionals was flying Bossk + Crack Shot + Concussion Missiles + Guidance Chips + K4 and Dengar + RecSpec + Proton Torpedoes + EM + Punishing One + Chips + Agromech + Deadeye.

Only other Top 8 list I can recall was Dan Hars with Chopper/Chewie (I think Predator, C-3P0, Engine, and maybe more on Chewie, and FCS, Hera, Autoblaster, and some other stuff on Chopper).

Edit: there were also triple Jumpmasters in the Top 8, I'm pretty sure.

I hope beyond hope that this is an accurate report. Bossk winning a regional with ordnance?! Brilliant!

Does nobody in Colorado upload to list juggler? I did a search, and NOTHING for the entire state showed up, ever.

Scroll to the final match -- Not quite what's listed above, but close: Dengar with Deadeye/RecSpec/R4/Plasma/EM/GC/PunishingOne and Bossk with Crackshot/K4/Concussions/EM/4-LOM. Scrolling back through the stream shows another Top 8 list was a Whisper/RAC list.

If you're told up front that you won't get a refund, then there's really no reason to get upset. You knew ahead of time how it would work, so why would you get upset if it happened exactly like you knew it would?

Exactly. And try to understand that a business isn't going to do this lightly, because "no refunds" is somewhat likely to dissuade sign-ups -- which is less business in the store -- and it's somewhat likely to make people delay signups -- which is less lead-time for the store.

So if they're doing "no refunds," then it's almost certainly because -- as they said -- tracking refunds and alternates and so on is simply too difficult to be worthwhile.

Why was it $30? What did it offer for that price?

Understood. I've worked plenty of retail so I know it's a fine line. I was concerned it would create a situation where, frankly, there was no reason to cancel and free up room if you couldn't attend - especially if you could call in and have someone pick up your range ruler (I didn't... but I hear that a few other non-attendees did).

I guess I was hoping for some sensible flexibility... but again, that's tough to do. Good help is hard to find and sometimes it can be easier to simply set a hard and fast rule.

San Diego is this weekend. 130 prepaid with a bunch on the wait list. Can't wait to play.

A bit of a surprise that San Diego and Portland are in the same weekend, but maybe that split up the west coast enough that both became "manageable". Here in PDX, we capped at 60, and all are prepaid (with a bunch on the wait list).

Can't imagine if we'd been scheduled on different weekends...yikes...

Wait. This still doesn't seem correct for the winners list. Bossk has no torp slot for EM... So I'm thinking no EM there and that's the list?

Played against a Bossk/Dengar list on VASSAL today similar to that and it's surprisingly effective. I can believe it won.

I thought it was worth the money for a very well run two days of events and additional store prizes.

Sounds like the price you pay to be a tournament player... I wouldn't give a single cent back. In fact I would let someone take you place.. I would even say that you have this person to thank for not showing up.

For 70 players? Yea, 2100 probably just covers the rulers, trays and what sounds like extra staff. I see no real glaring profit margin here.
