So, I probably should know this by now - can crew such as Jan and Kanan effect the ship they are on? Is the ship they are on "a friendly ship at range 1-2 1-3 ETC?

If it says 'a friendly ship' that includes the ship they're on. If it says 'another friendly ship' that excludes the ship they're on.

Jan and Kanan both work on the ship they're on.
