Alright so I have NEVER played a table top RPG before and I also haven't witnessed one before played before. However, because I am a HUGE Star Wars fan, I'd love to buy one of these RPG's and play with my group of friends, who are also big fans like me and haven't played a table top game before. My question is: How does all this work and what do I need to play? Also what is the difference between Edge Of The Empire and Force And Destiny, are they both new player friendly or is one more friendly to new players than the other? Oh and how long can a session last for? Detailed answers would be much appreciated! ![]()
Brand new playe who needs serious help!
I would recommend getting a beginner's game box first before jumping into a full core book. They are made for first time RPG and Star Wars RPG players. They last 3-5 hours depending on your groups efficiency.
Edge of Empire is based on bounty hunters and smugglers (Han and Chewbacca), Age of Rebellion is based on soldiers and pilots (Luke and Leia), and Force and Destiny is based on force senitives (Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi).
The beginners box comes with everything you need to play except for some scratch paper.
As for how it all works, there is two kinds of play, unstructured time and structured time. Unstructured time is when your group is exploring, talking to other characters, or solving puzzles. There is no turns or specific order for players. Structured time is organized by initiative and is used almost exclusively for combat. All skill use is based on dice rolls.
Yeah, your best bet is to grab one of the Beginner Box sets.
A dice pack normally costs 15 bucks anyway, so with a Beginner Box you're getting a free adventure, several pre-gen characters, some fairly decent maps, and plenty of tokens for an added 15 bucks. There's also two additional PCs you can use with the Beginner Box adventure that can be found on FFG's website, as well as a follow-up adventure.
As for which Beginner Box to grab, I'd suggest either the Edge of the Empire one or the Force and Destiny one. Both of them are pretty solid adventures, and the follow-up adventures are pretty good as well. The power curve in FaD is a tad wonky as a couple of the pre-gens start with full-blown lightsabers, which are incredibly powerful weapons in this system, and as such can make the BBEG battle a bit anti-climactic.
Edited by Donovan MorningfireBegginer Box is your best bet. If you are are using more than one of the Lightsaber PreGens, then I would recomend doubling the BBEG's wound threshold and giving him a lightsaber too.
I recommend EoE Beginner Game, that is how I fell in love with this line
Another voice for the EotE beginner set. Great tutorial to the game engine (and RPGs in general).
Add my vote for the Edge of the Empire Beginner Game. It's a fantastic, cost effective way to learn.
