Original Core Set Always Available?

By slowreflex, in X-Wing

I'm going to assume that it is, because it has some cards I don't think you can get in other expansions, but it's a but weird having two core sets. I currently have the Force Awakens Core Set. If there is any risk of the Original Core Set going away then I'd probably buy it sooner than I would have. However, I think they would only do this if all of the ships/cards were available in expansions right? Pretty sure FFG wouldn't do anything silly like discontinuing something and not having it available in something else.

I don't think you will have to worry about it for a while yet.

I would think you're right. It should be around for a while. If you're a rebel player (which I'm not), you should think about using Biggs for some builds (annoying as hell).

Not to mention R2-D2... core sets are good... somehow, I wasn't looking and over time I ended up with 2 of each. Heck, if nothing else, the ships are cheaper than just buying each of them individually, regardless of pilots and upgrades, extra dice, a spare set of everything else. Yes, you'll end up with too many torpedoes and such, but overall, it is a very good bargain.

In almost every FFG game you want two core sets. The LCGs don't give you full playsets, instead giving you enough for the starter decks so as not to simplify things for new players. X-Wing gives you three of each colour of dice which really isn't enough.

Having two core sets is actually quite good as it removes some of the redundancy (the damage decks are different, the asteroids are different and the pilots are different).

I wish they'd update it though. Include the current rule book at the very least. The new damage deck seems better (injured pilot) so it would be great if they replaced the old one.

Agree on the rule book. The damage deck is confusing though as they said it wasn't going to be legal anymore, but then changed their minds apparently. I think they need to stick to their guns and make it illegal and replace it as well like you suggest. It's a good way to maintain balance in the game.

Yeah releasing a 2nd core set they way they did was a mistake it just led to problems.

There is no problem now. There are a couple of people whining about it, but that is creating a problem, not identifying it.

A most wanted style pack for tfa stuff and a damage deck sold separately avoids all issues.

Once they have enough ships for Resistance and First Order - provided there are enough in the upcoming films and the game survives that long - they might separate factions and timelines. Then it makes sense to have 2 cores.

Right now it's awkward that in order to play some of the iconic OT stuff you need a core set which has outdated rules and an outdated damage deck.

And in order to have the new damage deck you have to buy TFA ships you might not at all be intrested in.

I wish they release an "updated edition", with new manual and damage cards. But the ships and cards should stay the same.

As a new player starting out I went with the old school approach of buying 2 Core sets. Red/Blue was my approach. You get most of the advantages of dual core while still getting a larger variety of ships/pilots. So I am glad that both Core Sets are available.
