FFG Plastic Dials, what next? FFG Tokens, Templates?

By slowreflex, in X-Wing

So they made plastic dials, are they likely to go for maneuver templates and tokens next? The tournament rules prohibit using 3rd party dials, but say using 3rd party templates and tokens is up to the marshall. Given that the dials seem to have gone down very well, it would make sound business sense for them to make better quality tokens and templates as well. If they did do this, it seems likely to me that they could then prohibit the use of all 3rd party tokens and templates in tournaments like they have done with dials. That's what I would do if I was them.

Anyway, the reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to decide if I want to go out and buy these things or not. How much of a risk do you think there is in that purchase decision?

None.

If you are unsure wether your 3rd party tokens would be allowed, bring a set of regular ones as well. Take up no space at all after all.

They already do make those. They put them in the tourny kits. Go buy some cool ones, they won't be making them illegal any time soon.

Nah, they'll keep tokens and templates as prizes for tournaments. I could see asteroid/debris tokens maybe.

They do make better quality templates and tokens. But because they are tournament prizes we are unlikely to see them purchasable in the market direct from FFG. They can be obtained second hand from individuals looking to offload extras if you're not into the tournament scene but have to have them. It is doubtful they will want to produce a third tier of templates & tokens in plastic.

Probably not... otherwise Team Covenant wouldn't be selling them...

You think FFG shares their product roadmap with them? People made dials as well before they released their own.

Well the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum had Wonder Woman's Invisible Jet on display last year so I guess Fantasy Flight could sell cloaked or invisible ships. Maybe the one from Clone Wars.

I hope FFG keeps the acrylic template/token goodies (dice and AA cards too) for tournaments and contests only.

Probably not.

If people made dials before FFG released their dial kit all of those previous dials HAVE been illegal. The only dials ever allowed have been FFG dials although some have been assembled with an extra washer or something to "distinguish" them from the dials of other people.

The templates from other companies have been legal to use for a long time and I don't see FFG making them causing them to backtrack on that ruling.

Well you can hybrid it now... There's already 3d printed dials

I honestly think the new dial covers were born out a simple admiration of a later design: The command dials from Armada.

I don't go in for this kind of thing as a general rule, but I bought a set and will get one of each set ultimately.

Not a dark side product, yo.

Next step: X-Wing models made of metal. ****, how I would love to say goodbye to those fragile Starvipers. And X-Wing cannons. I am so afraid I will break them one day...

I'm still keeping my hopes up that one day I will be able to buy some official FFG acrylic templates somewhere else than e-bay.

Shiny dice! The red and green have to stay, but they could look at marbeled, translucent or speckled patterns maybe :D

3rd party asteroids were specifically not allowed at the Hoth Open.

I did not realize that they gave them out as prizes. However, I don't see that as an issue. They can do this the same as MTG. Sell normal ones to anyone and still have special ones for the tournaments that you can't buy (except from someone that won one).

I remember an interview with Alex ~wave 4 or 5 where he said that OP was working really hard on cool swag, so they weren't going to sell the templates or anything else that would step on their toes. No dice, plastic cards, AA cards, tokens - anything that makes the OP stuff special. And personally, I think that's a good move. IT fosters community and as long as the swag is desirable, it ensures a healthy turnout for their tournaments. They made the third party templates (and tokens, minus asteroids apparently) legal because the measurements were straight forward enough that they could be reproduced at the right length and width. So you can play with acrylic, but if you want official goodies you have to come out to get them. Or pay exorbitantly on the ol' bay of e for them.
