Prototype Color Scheme for my Tie Fighter Squad.

By DiggityDug, in X-Wing

Im trying to come up with a unique color scheme for my Imperials. Everyone does red. Red red red! So i want to do something different. Im trying yellow, but I dont know if its intimidating enough. My local group keeps asking if I like the Steelers (which I do not). Keep in mind there will be stripes and markings on the wings.

I want to do half and half for my tie fighters and bombers. Tie Advanced will be black bodies with yellow wings. Tie Interceptors will be yellow bodies with black wings. I cant decide on my Tie Defenders.

I just dont know if the scheme is INTIMIDATING or silly... I cant make up my mind.

Problem is you're using pure blocks of colour I'd advise breaking up the yellow by painting the solar panels another colour.

Just my 2 pence.

As a non-american football watcher, I would never associate a spaceship with teamcolours :D
- But I think it looks great! The yellow colour reminds me of the yellow used on scorpion from Mortal Kombat!

The big round thing on the back is not an engine, it's a viewport. Engine exhaust are the two small trapeze things on the top and bottom of the viewport.

What you talking bout Willis?

I really like the look of the yellow on the solar panels, have you considered orange trim? I tried a simple repaint of the FO just by painting metallic silver on the leading edge of the panels, gives it a more aggressive "knife edge" look to that wing. And yellow is definitely aggressive, see the miner's TIEs!

The "engines" are not that giant hole in the back of the cockpit, they are those really tiny ports above and below that. And not many people will know it.

Well I sure did not, and Im about as Star Wars Nerdy as you can get! Now ill have to go back and paint that "viewport" red. Why did they not just make it like the window on the front of the ship? that makes no sense.

Oh well.

This is the rear of the Tie/Sf (Force Advanced) which clearly shows the viewport.

After some research, I find that you are entirely correct. I stand and salute you sir! I am but the learner, and you are the master.

The yellow looks good, which is saying something because yellow is hard to do on miniatures, in my experience. I agree with Hobo that it would be good of the solar panels were different than the yellow, though. I'd think about keeping both left and right panels the same. The body color is "livery", but the panels are functional, and for my taste, functional things are a certain color for a reason, and should be consistent on a ship. I'm kind of silly about that sort of thing, though, it does look good as is.

So I think I am going to keep the wings as is (solid colors) for the base Tie Fighters, put a vertical stripe up the middle, with a Empire Logo in the top panel and then Unit logo, and fighter number in other panels.

I will then do:

Tie Bombers - Same Split configuration but paint the panels on the yellow wing black.

Tie Advanced - Solid Black Body, with yellow stripes. Yellow wings with black panels

Tie Interceptors - Solid Yellow Body, Black wings with yellow stripes

Tie Defenders - Black Body with Black wings, with yellow stripes.

Tie Phantom - All Black (duh)

Tie Avenger - As this will be my personal ship, I haven't decided if I will go all yellow with black panels Red Baron style, or all black with yellow stripes like the tie defenders.

The big round thing on the back is not an engine, it's a viewport. Engine exhaust are the two small trapeze things on the top and bottom of the viewport.

I have been looking for proof of this, but the only time it's shown is in Star Wars Rebels, in the old canon it's a fueling port!

that's the special forces tie fighter, the ones in Xwing are the "regular" First Order Tie fighters, like this one:

I think it looks great! I have always been a sucker for split schemes and the bold and clean colors offer a great table top look. I say go for it!

With finishing detail work to break up the model a bit (kill markings, squad markings, stripes...) I think the once "intense" yellow will remain bold but not distract many people.

I second this.

Also, what about a horizontal 2-row yellow and white checkered strip across the panels, or cockpit if you have a steady enough hand?

The reason it's there is because of the practical effects of the OT. It was used to cover the mounting point for the motion control arms used during filming. The were 3; top, bottom and rear.

That's a Great Idea, but I don't want it to look like a Taxi. I will probably do some stripes on the wings. I may also put unit markings on the wings too, although that is non-cannon.

Would the Tie Taxi still avoid picking up minorities?

Dangit, Now personally, *I* would always stop to pick someone up, regardless of the color of their skin or the number of head tails they have. These are imperial ships though, and we all know what racist bastards the imperials are.

Since you left this on a public forum asking for our opinion...I don't like the yellow. It doesn't seem like a Imperil color sceme. I can't picture a lord of the sith telling his design team, "You know, they need some yellow, it would just pop wouldn't it?!?"

Tie fighter has markings on the ships in yellow.

The Video Game? Interesting... I have not played it in years. I have to go find out if its on steam and usable on Windows 10.

Good old games, never go steam for retro games they rarely work but GoG includes dosbox set up for you and a no quibble refund if it wont work.

No, I posted it here looking for feedback, not just fishing for compliments. I was not 100% convinced to begin with either. The challenge is that ALL repaints are red, so even then you don't have a unique squad, I thought about split white, red, or orange. Orange looked too Haloweeny. White was not different enough, and Red... well red was the same as everyone else is going. Red Decimators, Red Inteceptors. If you have any other links to good Tie Fighter schemes, Id love to look at them.

I like the yellow and black, it reminds me of yellow jacket hornets. Those little things are nasty!
