Young players surprise me ...for good!!!

By Hexdot, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I was very reticent to LGS play because I am a big boy much older than many players, and I am blessed with a group of my age. But x wing is powerfull...so I started playing LGS too. I was surprised, many 45 years old player out there, who can play perhaps twice a month but are avid fans.

But the biggest surprise was young players, 13-14 years old boys that can kick you in the groin with their own lists, not internet top tiers. I chated yesterday with a grown up player who loose 100-0 against a 14 years old player that kicked me too some weeks ago. Precise no play, no "ansiety" in his game, take time to think, but faster than adults...

Perhaps simply a pre teen mind goes faster than ours. It is míserable that a few players try to "intimidate" this young players, very few, but one is too much. This little pilot owns only one ATP, and his Baron of the Empire is a ...jajaja.

My main opponent is 15. At least while Walking Dead was on we got to play just about every week as his parents come over to watch the show with my wife. He still doesn't own any ships, but I find his ability to pick up new ships and get a feel for them is pretty remarkable. He can hold his own. He still has a preference for generics, but is starting to branch out in using more upgrade cards. In very little more time, I really expect him to be deadly with Imperial Aces and once he can see the board state for those guys I think his game will open up exponentially, which in turn will make me a better player. I can't wait!

I don't get why someone would try to intimidate a young player. Teach him to the best of your ability. Let him fly it back at you, and then you will learn. If you don't keep learning and having someone push you, you will never continue to get better.

There was a youngster in our Heroes of the Arturi Cluster game. Flew a 'Y' and did extremely well. Like Hex said, a quick mind. We tried to get him to change his call sign to "Chuckles" because he never smiled. He just played VERY well. Most of the time he was flying with guys his dad's age or older. Not the least bit intimidated or awed by us. I don't think there was a guy there who wouldn't want to fly as his wingman. I hope he come back for round two of Heroes.

Once played Magic against a young teen who wasn't even born when I started playing...

Nice kid, played well and lost gracefully, but... I couldn't feel superior. To busy feeling old and contemplating how much cash I had spent on MTG over the two decades.

All you X-wing players: That's your future! :)

Speaking as a father of 5, I see this as well. However, I would say it's more obvious on video games. I would like to hope that us wise older people would hold our own at a game that isn't a click-fest. :)

I think a lot of it has to do with frequency. My kids have a LOT more time to play games than I do.

My daughter can actually beat me on the soul calibur games, as long as I don't play Raphael or Siegfried (in which case I tend to curb stomp most people). I bought her streetfighter 2 yesterday... she's less good at that.

My Daughter is 6.

Not sure if lost my touch or kid really that good.

You must be quite young to enter Jedi Academy....and they were ( ejem.) wise masters of the force...

Hehhehe I'm more of a Nightmare player (except when i play Cervantes/ Voldo/Patrocoles)

At least you don't use Stickboy (Kilik) that guy is so cheap ;)

My niece to. a few years ago, she was also about six, and me and one of my mates were playing MK armageddon and she wanted to play to (with her mom frantically waving"Nooo!" in the background.) And I think, "I'm at the final boss, he bleeds lava and he's gonna pwn her in 5 seconds so she wont be exposed to long to MK violence." So I let her play: Aaaand she proceeds to circle strafe around the final boss, kicking and hitting it winning 1st round and almost defeating the final boss.

And I'm sitting there with my mouth agape...

Evidently the old adage that age and treachery beats youth and enthusiasm is not as certain as it once was.

These are the type of grade/middle school kids who used to get beat up for being in chess club. Now they fit in with the big Sci-fi trend and are in the popular croud.

You're welcome for paving the way. At least my hair was too short to get a swirly.

Oh treachery still beats a lot of things. ;)

Betrayaaaaaallll!

True, but it seems that the youth of today are picking up bad lessons from their elders.
