Ability Kanan vs evade action

By Staalborstel, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I played some games with the following build;

= Kanan Jarrus =

- Advanced Sensors

- Autoblaster turret

- Recon Specialist

Advanced sensors helped a lot to still get an action while bumping. The problem then is that I'm using one focus token for modifying his attack dice which weakens his ability to reduce incoming damage.

I was wondering if it would be better to take a cheaper pilot with Fire Control System and just take an evade action each turn.

Would the damage he'll receive be much less? Assuming he would be the focus of attack.

The maths would be complicated, but my inclination is that you get more out of using the foci in defence than you do the evade action - two foci is better than one evade, probably, as on average two foci save one damage, but they also have the potential of stopping more crits.

Plus, pilot!Kanan's ability is *annoying* and it's difficult to underestimate the value of making your opponent angry with your giant high-HP tank, as long as you have some way of capitalising on that.

You have another crew slot for a reason - your options include another Recon Specialist (for three total focus), Kyle (for guaranteed focus every round, even if stressed), Jan (for focus&evade every round) etc. I can't recomend Zeb on Kanan's ship, as he accelerates the Ghost's death, on a ship that works best the longer it is kept on the board.

It depends, but in general, I would say it is better to have an evade. However, in the earlier phase of the game you can use Kanan to reduce number of attack dice that are being thrown at your other ship(s) which is a perfect support.

This part is also worth noting and emphasising. Kanan doesn't just affect himself, and if you run him alongside a high-defence ally he can make them almost impossible to hit - or if you run him with Biggs... SUperbly annoying.
