Rogue One: Anyone modeling an ISD-I?

Seriously as an Armada fan this has made me the happiest out of anything coming out of Rogue One (apart from being Star Wars).

The ISD-I has largely been confined to A New Hope and a few other places (Like a vehicle cross-section guide). Whenever we see an ISD-I, it's usually downplayed to make it pass as an ISD-II (greyed out, targeting sensor down). Not only are the old changes there, but they brightened it up to make it a clear translation from the Devestator in A New Hope.

It's almost made me want to get another ISD to convert it into the ISD-I variant. What I wanted to know is if anyone else felt the same way, and where to get some resources to make the conversion?

I can think of a few things needed to pull this off, besides paint:

  • New Gun turrets: The four side guns topside need to be emphasized over the recessed quad guns.
  • Engine Baffles: ISD-Is have them. IIs do not.
  • Bridge Facade: Emphasized features over the II.
  • Vertical Targeting array: I think the Armada ISD-II version isn't as tall as the one above is.

So, any modelers have some thoughts to share on this?

yeah looks sweet... i was thinking of having some modification to show the difference between a I and a II with my ISDs but wouldnt have the slightest clue how to pull it off... so the ones we get out of the packages are IIs??

Working on it already.

Good guy Drasnighta already working on a conversion.

Dras, can you share with us how it's going? What parts you got and what complications you had?

Me too.

Good when it is ready I am down. Going to have to brighten up my ISD-I's paint scheme as well.

Don't forget the turrets and such on the lower hull!

And also please don't forget the 8 octuple guns on the ISD-II, I'd love to have a more proper representation of those rather than the flattened turret on the model.

Might have to work on a 3d printed conversion kit...

Working on it already.

Me too.

You guys are awesome. All I do is throw around my half-baked opinions.

(All of the above IIRC).

I wonder how true to the original the Rogue One ISDI is going to be. It's hard to make out the turrets in the superstructure's shadow.

Does anyone have any close-up pictures of the proper differences in the engines?

Care of 1977 :)

If you watch the trailer in HD, you can see the individual gun barrels on the midline dorsal turrets. I'm hoping we get some high quality FX shots of those turrets traversing and firing a la Ep III!!!!

I REALLY appreciate the ISD-I in full, modern FX glory. Just the lighting on that makes me happy/tingly inside.

Here's a good shot of those gun turrets:

Of course maybe we'll get an official model with new commander , upgrades and crew taken from the new film.

Well, people have predicted this for every new Star Wars thing so far, and nothing...

... New Stuff because of TFA... Nothin'.

... New Stuff because of Rebels Season Two... Nothin'.

... New Stuff because of Rebels Midseason... Nothin'.

... New Stuff because of Rebels End Season... Nothin'.

I'm sure there' smore. In fact, I'm sure I've posted more in a different thread at some stage...

I mean, I want new stuff. But I think Wave 3 tells us we'll get New Stuff when FFG says we get new stuff, and not because of any other abritrary factor that we'll actually know anything about.

They'll never admit to saying "yeah, there will be more stuff once Rogue One is released." because they'll never admit to anything.

I just wouldn't get hopes up based on the New-Things alone.

So I was looking at my Star Destroyer tonight and noticed that the "X" array is essentially laying down flat on the FFG mini. How easy is it to remove that piece and reconfigure it?

I'm sure we'll get new stuff eventually, and some of that will come from the new films/show. It's just not happening very fast right now. It also looks like Rogue I is going to try to show us stuff we've seen before (Death Star, ISDI, AT-AT walkers), with just a few new things (like that lander, the armored vehicle), but still mostly focused on the things we're familiar with.

I doubt an ISD one alternate model because - while it would be cool (like alternate paint scheme X-Wing models) - it would be more laborious to produce with limited added value.

That said, I wonder if Mel is going to craft small bits and pieces that we could glue onto our ISDIIs in order to make them ISDIs, rather than making a whole ISDI model.

That certainly is an easy option. No need for 3D printing there.

What I wish, is that FFG had released the miniatures a little more in line with the Warhammer mentality. One model that can be made into more than one configuration. Sure, it would have meant some assembly required, but how nice it would have been to have the main body of the ships done, and a snap-fit bits sprue that allows you to make it either a I or a II.

Ah well...what we have works. And no assembly required is always a nice plus.

I think that most people who want to be active in making their miniatures look just right, actually like the challenge of doing so. I'm quite happy with the unpainted squadrons, because that allowed me to paint them myself. For those without the time, it's nice just to be able to open the box and start playing.

We will not see an ISD-I model, because the game already contains the ISD-I within the Imperial Star Destroyer pack. Releasing a new model for it would be kind of redundant. If the ISD was in need of patching for some reason I can see them doing that in an aces pack... but X-Wing aces pack use the same model with a repaint job and new cards. There's never been a new model needed to represent a new ship, and FFG probably won't start over this one.

No, I have the feeling that if we want ISD-I configured ships, we'll have to make them ourselves.

That said, again, anyone know of some resources for us wanting to make the conversion, or anyone willing to share WIP shots?

While I don't argue the world is filled with folks that are compelled to tweak their toys, I think you're being a bit presumptuous to say that. I'd compare it to the statement "I think most people want to be active in touching up the paintings they hang in their house to make them just right." Desire does not equate to ability. The mere fact that folks contract out to paint others miniatures is proof of that.

I have an Imperial Guard army from 40K and I doubt there is an unmodified figure in the lot. But cutting up tiny plastic men isn't quite the same as cutting up a ship.

Just look at how many different versions of the CR Mel has and I think that's evidence enough that there is a market out there for variations of design without the purchaser being the one that has to make it.

Purchasing conversion "bits" from a third party is not far off from just having the bits come with the original purchase and putting it together a bit different.

I agree most people want their models "right." I can't agree that most have the confidence, patience, and ability to be the one that makes them so.

Heck, if we could, FFG wouldn't be able to sell anything. We'd all be carving our fleets out of wood at home. :)
