Jan Ors or Jyn Erso? (Did Disney killed Dark Forces?)

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

Or the man-children who play this game and see her crew everywhere?

The official subtitle for brazilian portugues is "Jyn ORSO".

I still think its jan ors. Disney likes to play tricks on us and they will change the name when it airs so everyone screams like a crazy boy

By everyone, you mean the 12 people who actually remember the character from when they played that game way back in the 90s?

I dunno, there are more of us around than you'd think.

Yeah, if you take everyone here and triple that you might just break the 50K in ticket sales :P

Cos subtitles are never wrong ;) seriously, wait until the cast list is out. Check out the character bio. This is Ors.

Pablo Hidalgo confirmed it was Jyn Erso.

Hey i have no problem whatsoever with this fresh start and new characters and all.

But why this name? They **** well know that in Legends there is a character with a similar name being involved in similar operations.

I mean if they had called her Paula Baker or Insert Name Here nobody would even have had the idea that this was Jan Ors and that Kyle Katarn may or not wander from Legends to Canon...

Honestly, I think it is stretching from fans to make Jyn Erso = Jan Ors.

In making new characters that are similar to old character it makes a point of saying :no, the old EU is dead and gone, and also adds "we get to make a whole new backstory with a clean slate without massive fanboy reactions".

The only way she'll be Jan Ors is if at the end, if she lives, she has to change her name due to being a spy/infiltrator.

Or at some point during the film she adopts a pseudonym and it's Jan Ors.

I like to think it's sort of an oral storytelling sort of situation (long time ago, far, far away, and Star Wars people don't read) where you have a series of events that are recorded and remembered a little differently by different groups, depending on who was remembering which event. That's why we're getting some similarities between new stuff and old EU stories. So "Jyn Erso" is a version of a character in one set of stories that is roughly parallel to "Jan Ors" in another set of stories. Sort of like "Han Solo the Smuggler" vs "Han Solo the general".

It's cute when people still dream of EU characters showing up.

The Twins already showed up in TFA.

Rey and Kylo? They are 10 years apart in age!

Just pretend it's Jan and all the stories your know still happened and this is another. Doesn't hurt anyone.

I'd like to pretend Revan, Dash and Xizor is still canon. Makes me happy

This is the best attitude. Don't let anyone else tell you what is or is not canon for you. This allows the above poster to pretend that Dash and Xizor are still canon, while I get to pretend they never were canon, and we both get to be happy!

The Outrider is in ANH :P

Xixor is admitted not in TCW, just people of his race are in control of black sun. *g*

The Outrider is in ANH :P

If only we knew who piloted the thing. :P.

But it doesn't matter one bit. What is, and isn't canon is important for the writers to keep a consistent story and all the fluffy bits now put on a shelf and called Legends is still there to be enjoyed. Canonicity be damned. :P.

Who is the grand admiral?

You will know who he is when he grabs the skin of his face and rips it off (ala Red Skull), revealing the blue skin underneath.

Disney didn't pay $4 billion for the franchise to retread stories and characters from thirty years of the EU. You might see some nods and references, but I doubt we're ever going to see any EU characters take center stage.

I think you are most likely right about this, but I am also wondering about something.

Firstly, I think Disney is toying with the fans by naming this character J... E.... rather than.... ANY OTHER #$%@# NAME THAT DOESN'T BEGIN WITH A J AND A SOFT VOWEL. I'm enjoying the laugh.

Nevertheless... This dude in white has me curious.

In the EU, Fleet Admiral (which he definitely is, by his rank insignia) plus White Uniform = GRAND ADMIRAL. I don't know if that is ever found in canon or not, and frankly I don't care enough to look for it. Nevertheless, they have put a fleet admiral in a white uniform knowing that there is a precedent for what that means.

The book Aftermath teases the existence and survival of exactly one, (1), (uno), (ein), (!=2 or more) Grand Admiral after Endor. They do NOT name him. But the characters speak about him in reverential capital pronouns, as if HE needs no introduction because no one else could ever have the same significance as HIM. Why would they set this up as an obvious tease? Are they simply loading Checkov's gun with blanks?

If this guy's name turns out to be "Shraun" or "Throon"... I will be mildly annoyed. And I sincerely hope there is no pilot named "Torrin Bourne".

Unless the writer wrote her as Jan Ors, but Disney said no so he went back and thought "erm...oh...Jyn...um...Orso, thats it!"

Not an important detail... Archetypically they're identical. If Kylo had a thing for animals it straight up seals the deal.

I really hope she's disguising her true name somehow. I really really want her to be Jan Ors.

I was super excited after seeing the teaser. This and the return of the HWK-290 as canon made me very happy! (even though it seemed bigger than I hoped ;))

Was there a HWK-290 in the teaser? I just rewatched it and didn't see anything. Although the scene where she is leaning against a ship's window could potentially be a HWK.
It looked like a HWK window to me. We will see though...

The Kanan comics feature a HWK-290 ship, so it's official canon. Perhaps that was meant in stead of it appearing in the teaser/trailer.

Let me re-post this regarding the uniform thing:

He's wearing the same uniform that Wullf Yularen was wearing in Star Wars, and he was in Imperial Intelligence. So stands to reason the bad guy hunting the rebels would also be from Imperial Intelligence and uniformed similarly.

WullfYularen.jpg

He's not a Grand Admiral.

In the EU, Fleet Admiral (which he definitely is, by his rank insignia) plus White Uniform = GRAND ADMIRAL.

In the EU, Fleet Admiral may be a position rather than a rank - with the hierarchy being:

High Admiral

Fleet Admiral

Systems Admiral

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Fleet_Admiral

Rank hierarchy seems to run:

Admiral

Vice Admiral

Rear Admiral

The Essential Guide to Warfare used code cylinders as a way of distinguishing divisions between admirals with the same rank plack.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Rank_insignia_plaque/Legends

For example, Ozzel and Kassius Konstantine both have a 6x2 chest plack.

But Ozzel has 3 cylinders, and Constantine has 4.

Which, using their chart, would suggest that while they are both full Admirals, Ozzel's position is Fleet Admiral, and Kassius's would be High Admiral.

We don't know yet if the EU's taking a similar approach.

It was a lot more than that. I knew friends that weren't even huge Star Wars fans that played that game. It would only HELP Disney to keep continuity with names, because then those kids who are grown up now may just be a little more likely to take themselves and their kids to the movie.

The number of people who A: have affection for Dark Forces/Jedi Knight and B: won't be swayed to go see the movie by a combination of marketing, reviews, word of mouth, and general Star Wars Is Good Again hype but who C: would go see Rogue One if only Jan Ors were in it is none. There are no people like that.

I'm sorry, that was slight hyperbole. There may be, like, two. In the whole world. I'm sorry for not treating them with the respect they deserve as my fellow humans.

It was FFG who made Disney rename Jan and Kyle so they could sell more unique pilot/crew cards.

True story.

THIS IS NOT JAN ORS! THE EU IS DEAD! Didn't Ben Solo tip anyone off to this? New character. Every character is new from now on. Reboots; it's how the world works now.

This is not a reboot, I don't think you know what a reboot is.

This is scrapping a portion of the story that never made it to the big screen and was fractured, broken, and stupid. A reboot would be going back to the start and restarting. To most the EU never existed anyways.
