Jan Ors or Jyn Erso? (Did Disney killed Dark Forces?)

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

I was super excited after seeing the teaser. This and the return of the HWK-290 as canon made me very happy! (even though it seemed bigger than I hoped ;))

Was there a HWK-290 in the teaser? I just rewatched it and didn't see anything. Although the scene where she is leaning against a ship's window could potentially be a HWK.

so why is she in a Tie fighter outfit at the end? was hoping she was/is becomes Howl runner... with the hints of "what will you become" supporting her shift to the Dark side..lol also why does it say Lucas films and not disney???

I actually had a thought, perhaps she converts and then turns in to an emperor's hand. Then changes her name to Marcia Shade....

Because she is supposedly infiltrating the Death Star in a Gunner's uniform.

The Kanan comics feature a HWK-290 ship, so it's official canon. Perhaps that was meant in stead of it appearing in the teaser/trailer.

Seeing 'Canon' as 'what actually happened' and the Legends stuff as 'what some people in universe believe happened', the Jyn/Jan thing could just be down to 100s of years of the story being told and retold.

ALSO: The original writer was the editor for PCGamer (UK games magazine) when Dark Forces came out.

That was indeed what I meant! As far as I know, there is no HWK in the teaser...

My first response... Jan Ors? Wtf!?!?

I loved Dark Forces and the Jedi Knight games, heck Kyle is one of my favorite legends characters. However, think back to Jedi knight. Kyle finds a lightsaber, and then...he's a Jedi. No training, no experience, nothing. He picks up a lightsaber and can instantly deflect blasters and lop people in half with ease. And people complain about Rey using force powers instantly?

All I'm saying is that having some Easter eggs or a wink and nod to Dark Forces would be awesome, but I really don't want "dark forces: the movie". This is a different interpretation of how some events occurred, and they can co-exist peacefully without too much hand-wringing about the "official" interpretation.

Lest we forget, Star Wars happened "a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away." It's only natural that different versions of these myths exist.

Who is the grand admiral?

It was also brought into cannon by the mobile game "Star Wars: Commander" along with the TIE Defender, YT-2400, VT-49 and no idea what else. Got bored of the game quite quickly myself...

Man I don't like how Kanan looks like the Jedis coffe barista!

Who is the grand admiral?

I am think he is an Admiral, not a Grand Admiral. If you check his rank bars, they are the same as Admiral Ozzel's in ESB.

Now the uniform is different and lighter in colour. It actually looks similar to the uniform worn by Wullf Yularen in ANH. His background was that he was Deputy Director of the Naval Intelligence Agency. Yularen was one of the officers assigned to the Death Star.

Based on that, it could be a new character from NIA. This would be pretty appropriate for a story based around espionage. It would give the heroes a suitable antagonist without bringing in big guns to deal with every security breach. Vader was only unleashed once it became clear what the Rebels had stolen.

He's flying around in a HWK now? If Kanan wasn't Kyle before, he sure is now!

OP asked, "Did Disney killed Dark Forces?"

The answer is yes. Disney killed all EU content in one swift stroke. Whether or not they want to resurrect any of it is the question.

Prefacing my post with a warning that there are Rebels spoilers, including the Season 2 Finale.

The trailer certainly makes the fate of Kyle and Jan much more clear, but it's hardly the first stroke of writing them out of canon. As mentioned before, Kanan's character borrows heavily from Kyle Katarn, from his physical appearance (clothing, especially the lone pauldron, and his human features minus the pony tail) to his backstory (a sort of lone wolf who has to lead himself to the light side of the force through unconventional methods; he also has street smarts, is handy with a blaster, and bends the rules quite a bit). And as shown in this thread, Kanan rides in a HWK in the final issue of his titular comic series, which is absolutely a nod to Kyle. [spoiler if you have not seen the Rebels Season 2 Finale] This is a long shot, but there also might be a nod to Kyle Katarn's nemesis, Jerec, in the Rebels finale where Kanan is blinded by a lightsaber slash to his eyes and has to wear a band around them. Maybe taking some other elements, the good and the bad, of Kyl's story? It's certainly a stretch.

But also there's Hera Syndulla, who is so much like Jan Ors. Hera's the ace pilot who has a long relationship with Kanan, and a possible romantic interest. They've been through a lot together, and she has saved Kanan's ass more than once. This is so much like Kanan and Jan's relationship, down to the way they are honest with each other, yet playfully sarcastic. Hera is also voiced by Vanessa Marshall, who voiced Jan Ors in Jedi Knight: Outcast. The only physical appearance borrowed is the goggles strapped over her head (they are different species after all).

Jyn Erso seems like she will expand on who Jan Ors could've been, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Diego Luna borrows a little from Kyle (just looking at his appearance, he could pass as a Kyle Katarn). The main point here is Kyle and Jan are out of the new canon and won't be included. However, no old EU characters have been used as sources of inspiration as much as Jan and Kyle. That's what's important - as a huge Dark Forces / Jedi Knight fan, I can rest easy knowing the creators of the different Star Wars media really appreciate these characters and have made more popular/featured characters with their likeness. I don' think any fan could ask much more with the way the EU has been thrown to the wayside.

No, no they didn't. Nothing changed from when Lucas was at the helm.

Just pretend it's Jan and all the stories your know still happened and this is another. Doesn't hurt anyone.

I'd like to pretend Revan, Dash and Xizor is still canon. Makes me happy

They're not and how dare you try to have fun with Star Wars. Join the groupthink. HAIL MICKEY!

This, so much this. I think it's also worth noting that some of the most interesting and enduring EU characters that weren't just carbon copies of existing characters didn't come from a book. They didn't come from a graphic novel, they didn't come from an RPG or an older show. They came from a video game. A FPS of all things. Remember when video games had story? Pepperidge Farms remembers...

I can freely admit that some of my favorite EU characters are just reskinned versions of other characters. Dash is the budget Han Solo, complete with the non-human co-pilot/engineer. Corran is essentially a cockier version of Luke if he didn't go to Dagobah (although I, Jedi remains one of my favorite EU books - flawed but fun). Kyle and Jan, however? There's nothing quite like them in the other characters. Jan is a true believer and a rebel operative, a "boots on the ground" type of rebel we don't see in the films with any development until the rebels show. Kyle was a stormtrooper and an officer who became a mercenary and only slowly began to side with the rebellion, a truly reluctant hero distinct enough from a career outlaw like Han Solo. In fact, you could argue that Finn is influenced by Kyle as well (I know he wasn't, the idea for a defecting stormtrooper supposedly came about independently of past stories). Just goes to show the enduring nature of Kyle and Jan as characters.

I still think its jan ors. Disney likes to play tricks on us and they will change the name when it airs so everyone screams like a crazy boy

The answer is yes. Disney killed all EU content in one swift stroke. Whether or not they want to resurrect any of it is the question.

No, no they didn't. Nothing changed from when Lucas was at the helm.

It certainly did.

The previous situation was the EU would try to be self consistent with everything written ever, including the 80s material where they just didn't care. George Lucas's stuff would use what he liked but pave over anything he didn't and let the EU try to correct for it. It became quite a mess towards the end with The Clone Wars overwriting left right and centre. The old EU works better if you treat TCW as part of the new canon alone, as Rebels is.

Disney took the EU canon, put it in a box and pushed it to one side. They source things from it because it's way easier than doing everything from scratch, but it in of itself is in essence a complete canon now that won't be developed further.

They then started their new canon, using the six films and TCW as their starting point. Everything forward from there is considered part of that canon and they endeavour to keep it self consistent with their central Story Group.

The EU still exists, they didn't burn all the material or anything, but it exists as Legends and they aren't adding to it. Their new canon is separate and consists initially of the Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy, The Clone Wars, and then everything they add to it (Rebels, the Sequel Trilogy, the Anthology Films, the new Marvel comics, Clone Wars Legacy Project and the new novels) is part of the new canon.

The Clone Wars animated series must have been such a kick in the teeth for Dark Horse who no doubt paid A LOT for the Star Wars license only for one of their best and most successful comic series to be overwritten by Lucasfilm. Before Disney had anything to do with it...

It's cute when people still dream of EU characters showing up.

The Twins already showed up in TFA.

By everyone, you mean the 12 people who actually remember the character from when they played that game way back in the 90s?
