Kyle Katarn and Dark Forces are my most favorite things Star Wars has ever produced.
And uh, I've got no complaints. So no, DIDNEY didn't kill off something beloved, but if they did..? So what?
You think George would have ever even cared about something he didn't make? At least Disney has borrowed accurately and heavily from the EU in a way that works into their narrative- which, so far? Is really pretty **** good.
It's cute when people still dream of EU characters showing up.
Or fly OT ships in this game called Xwing.
Just pretend it's Jan and all the stories your know still happened and this is another. Doesn't hurt anyone.
I'd like to pretend Revan, Dash and Xizor is still canon. Makes me happy
Xizor is canon, well at least Black Sun is mentioned in Clone Wars and several of the newer cannon books.
Edited by Wizzardx3So I guess the question is this the Dark Forces plot and are these the same characters or has it been scrapped like the rest of the EU?
Why would Dark Forces be an exception when everything else got the boot? The only canon sources anymore are the 7 movies, the Clone Wars cartoon(not including the Tartakovsky one), Rebels, and any books and comics produced since the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm. Everything else is Legends unless some new material brings it back. Is Jyn Erso suspiciously similar a name to Jan Ors? Yes, a little I guess, but she's not going to be Jan Ors, and assuming it's not just a coincidence they'll likely only be taking some inspiration from Dark Forces and nothing further.
I was really excited when I thought I heard her say Jan Ors. Darkforces one and two were the last badass Star Wars shooters. I remember being scared to play the third level of darkforces, because the dianogas would pop-up out of the water in your face.

Agreed, they are telling new stories that fir better into their cohesive canon but leaving little Easter Eggs and homages like her similar name and Malachor in Rebels so that the old isn't completely forgotten and tossed aside.
How is it that people are still struggling to understand the old EU canon is dead? Long live the new canon. As much you might hope for Jan Ors, or Kyle Katarn, the chances of them showing up are very slim indeed. Yes, the new movies may draw on elements of their characters and others from the old EU when developing their ideas, but don't expect the characters you know from stories gone by to show up anytime soon.
I'd actually much prefer if this was just a completely new, interesting character that Disney has created (I've bolded the most important part).
Don't get me wrong. The EU is cool, but I don't need constant Easter eggs reminding me of it in this new Star Wars universe that Disney is creating. It's a little desperate and smells of catering to Fan-boys.
*wink, wink, nudge, nudge* "hey her name's Jan Ors, just like that character from that game you liked. Isn't that awesome. Give me your money!"
Not to sound negative though. I am quite excited for this film.
Its jan ors.
with a `sir` at the end.
compare it to the way she sais `sir` again at about :57
Even if that were true (and I wish it was), she doesn't say 'Jan', she says 'Jyn'.
And she doesn't say 'Ors' (as in the things needed to row a boat), she says 'Urs'.
Unless she's adopting a South African accent (!), in which case forget all the above...
South African accent it is!
(I like my delusions in a way which make me happy)

The people who wish George was back at the helm tend to forget that if he had made Episode 7, he would have just written whatever he wanted and plowed through the EU canon like a cannon ball through a building.
He didn't care about the EU one bit and would have ruined so many storylines without remorse and left those poor EU "keepers" to clean up the mess by retconning everything affected.
Better to do it the way Disney did.

Lucas broke canon between his own films, there is no way he would have paid any regards to EU materials.

Care not. EU is here, it's alive, we have Jan Ors and Katarn is Bro4Life with Dash.
So we DO NOT care, in our jurassic X-wing park we care not for filthy meddling of da mouse
At 1:58 do they say 'Jyr Jyr Bonks' .... ? ![]()

Jan or not Jan makes no difference. The Legends character most know and love will likely have little in common with this new iteration.
Disney went clean slate with all existing video games as well. Best to treat this like you've been MIB'd. In other words, what you think you know you do not know. Otherwise you're gonna have a bad time.
I'd prefer if it was treated like a superhero comic book movie.
Like, I know Movie Thor isn't going to be exactly the same as Comic Book Thor. It's not the same continuity. But they're still making Thor.
I know Disney Jan and Kyle wouldn't be exactly the same as EU Jan and Kyle, but I still want them to make a Disney Jan and Kyle.
And if they borrow the plot directly from Dark Forces, with Jan taking a more direct role, what then?
To be fair, the movie is about stealing the Death Star plans.
Nothing in Dark Forces beyond the first level is actually about stealing the Death Star plans. It's about destroying a new army of droid troopers, which, after the prequels, is not nearly as cool or threatening sounding as it used to be.

What people? I've never heard of anyone who thought that Lucas would have respected EU canon. Stop making up strawmen.

Not entirely true. Corruscant was first named in the Thrawn Trilogy. The Witches of Dathomir were from an old novel about Leia. Aayla secura was an EU character Lucas brought into the movies. The Outrider is seen leaving Mos Eisely in the special edition of ANH. Darth Bane (or the spirit of) is in season 6 of the Clone Wars and Revan nearly made that episode too. Rakata Prime (from KOTOR) has made it into the main universe as has Malachor (from KOTOR 2). Other things have made it through too but not under Lucas' watch. Nar Shadaa for example.
The EU is dead! Long live the EU!
On a serious note; Disney have said they will not be using EU characters but very similar new characters. So we have Kannan (as Ram Kota) with Ezra (as Galen Marek) in Rebels (Force Unleashed). We have Kylo Ren (as Jacen Solo) and now we have Jyn Urso (Jan Ors) in Rouge One (Dark Forces). I'd expect a lot more fan service as time goes on and I'd expect Dark Empire to end up being a forgotten stain in the carpet of Star Wars.
Also, no Disney did not kill Dark Forces. It's still available, you can still enjoy it as much as ever.
so why is she in a Tie fighter outfit at the end? was hoping she was/is becomes Howl runner... with the hints of "what will you become" supporting her shift to the Dark side..lol also why does it say Lucas films and not disney???
so why is she in a Tie fighter outfit at the end?
Because it isn't?
Besides, do you really expect an answer? Do you really even want one right now?
also why does it say Lucas films and not disney???
Because Disney own Lucasfilm who are the production company making the film. Same as the Marvel movies sport the Marvel Studios logo
so why is she in a Tie fighter outfit at the end? was hoping she was/is becomes Howl runner... with the hints of "what will you become" supporting her shift to the Dark side..lol
More likely she is undercover for part of the film in order to actually steal the plans. It is possible she is a traitor/double agent (JJ cut his teeth on Alias, even if he is not heavily involved in R1) but if that were the case, I doubt they would spoil such an important plot point in the trailer.
The EU is dead! Long live the EU!
This is my opinion as well!
Disney has proven with VII that STAR WARS is in good hands. Let's all sit back and enjoy all the new things they throw at us and politely thank them for all the little winks and nudges towards the old EU.
Even if Jyn Ersa is Kyle and Jan wrapped into one, I'm very certain they will make an awesome character out of her. A girl with a lightsaber and some questions is after all just as good as a guy with a lightsaber and some questions!
I was super excited after seeing the teaser. This and the return of the HWK-290 as canon made me very happy! (even though it seemed bigger than I hoped
)

I just wanna say that, if I wasn't a Stormtrooper - I'd hit dat.
