Squadron choosing which hull zone to attack

By Xeletor, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Can a squadron pick between two hull zones of the same ship or does it have to attack the closest one? I saw a video claiming the latter is true but cannot find anything in the rules. My searches gave no clue either! Thx

I think they can choose of they have line of site to two different hull zones.

You measure line of site from the closest point on the fighter base to the closest point on the arc (I think, on my phone, so I can't look it up right now.) That shouldn't mean that you can only attack the closest hull zone by distance.

Ships do not have to attack the Closest Hull Zone if they have Line of Sight.

There is no mention of Squadrons required to shoot the closest hull zone.

The only difference for squadrons is that their "LOS Dot" isn't a Dot, its the closest point of the Hull, which can lead to some tricky LOS work when you still need to measure LOS to the Enemy's Hull Zone Dot.

In short, if there's LOS and you're in Range, shoot away.

Worth noting, because I find myself explaining it often:

Line of Sight (RRG 7)

When tracing line of sight to or from a squadron, trace the line using the point of the squadron’s base that is closest to the opposing squadron or hull zone.

Note that the point you are measuring from is not the closest point to the target ship , but the closest point to the target hull zone . This may means that you're probably measuring LoS from different points on the squadron when checking LoS to different target hull zones.

When targeting squadron-to-squadron, by contrast, you can always check LoS from post to post, because geometry (the shortest line between two circles also passes through the center point of both circles).

Thanks! And kudos to ardaedhel for geometry and a detailed answer!
